Today we honor Richard Fahrenbruch of Fort Collins, Colorado, who fell on this day in 1968. He is remembered by his daughter:

"His family was eagerly awaiting his return home as his tour was due to end. The day he died he went out on watch and his troop mates told him to be careful. His reply was, "I am a short timer here, I will." Unfortunately he was killed by a sniper. His daughter Lori and son Larry will forever be grateful to the troop mates who were there with him and who years later made a special trip to Colorado to meet Sarge's children."

"My Uncle Joe is on the wall and I wanted to honor him on the day of his death on Apr 7 1966. I will always remember him as a strong man with a soft heart. I was only 10 when he was killed and will always remember his love for life. He would come by and take me for ice cream, talking about how he was going to enlist in the navy to see the world. He gave me the courage to join the military when I became of age. It has been 48 years since he was taken from us and we keep him in our hearts and prayers."

Jon is remembered by his brother, Charles: "John is 9 yrs. younger so our relationship was limited. He was quiet of nature, but strong In his beliefs."

Archive Photo of the Day: 173rd Airborne Brigade on patrol in Vietnam, 1965.

Soldiers from the 173rd Airborne Brigade slosh through a stream during a jungle patrol in South Vietnam in May, 1965. A Stars and Stripes story about the 173rd described the jungle as "Hot, sultry and dangerous; where you walk 10 yards to go forward five; where the enemy can be 30 feet away, hidden by the foliage; where you pick your feet up almost to your knees to keep from tripping on vines; where you sir down for a break only to be covered by insects, such as ants a quarter-inch long."
(Mike Mealey ©Stars and Stripes)

"Killed in Action April 10, 1969 in Vietnam, a month before his 20th birthday. Private First Class Ronald Joseph Toward was a beloved son and brother, an uncle whom I wish I could have met. His passing was much for the family to endure and things were never quite the same. I treasure his letters which he sent home as it gives me a glimpse into his experience. I consider him a hero and he will not be forgotten."

Today we honor Kenneth Brinker of Bartonville, Illinois, who fell on this day in 1969. He is remembered by his very good friend, Dawn:

"Kenny and Denny enlisted with the proviso that they could be stationed together. They were. They were in a fox hole when a grenade landed and exploded. Denny saw Kenny explode with it. Denny was sent home. They had always been so full of fun and practical jokes. But Denny wasn't Denny anymore. I visited him (he wouldn't leave the house) often and sat and cried with him and tried to talk, but he couldn't talk. He would just lay his head on my shoulder. This went on for a few months. I went to visit one day and no one was home. I learned the next day that his parents had come home from shopping and found that he had hung himself in the basement. His note said that half of him was gone and there wasn't enough left to go on living. They were the Brinker's only sons. One younger sister. Mrs. Brinker had a nervous breakdown and was institutionalized for nearly a year. It has been so long ago, but when I think of it, it is like it happened yesterday. And the pain of it still brings me to my knees sobbing

Carl David Divelbiss

Carl David "Dave" Divelbiss, (CDR, Supply Corps, USN, Ret.), age 73, passed away of lung cancer on September 28, 2008 at his home in Roslyn, Washington. He retired from the Navy after 22 years of service to his country. While in Vietnam Dave served on the USS Benewah (APB-35) from July 1966 to May 1968 as Supply and Logistics Officer on the Staff of Commander River Assault Flotilla One - Commander River support Squadron Seven from it's onset on September 1966 to April 1968.  He initiated the planning of supply functions required for the new Mekong Delta Mobile Riverine Force and was the author of the new Navy supply support concept of riverine warfare.  He developed the complete supply support plan and detailed supply procedures for the entire Mobile Riverine Base of 5 ships, 100 boats and almost 4,000 Army and Navy personnel.  Dave leaves behind his devoted wife Fran of 50 years, his son, two daughters and their spouses and five grandchildren.  Dave was a wonderful man and devoted husband, father and grandfather and he will be sorely missed not only by all his family but by his many friends as well.  He often spoke of all who he served with in Vietnam and his hope was to have attended one of the MRFA reunions, which unfortunately did not happen.
