#Onthisday in 1965: General Westmoreland requests 44 battalions, sparking debate within the Johnson administration on how many combat troops to commit to war. Westmoreland felt the South Vietnamese could not defeat the communists alone, wanting U.S. combat troops to go on the offensive against the enemy.http://bit.ly/1popLWN (AP Photo) — with Josue Escoto.

Today we honor John Garrett of Washington, District of Columbia, who passed away on this day in 2013. He is remembered by his daughter, Olivia:

"John William Garrett, Jr. was born on December 10, 1931 to John
William, Sr. and Ethel Marie Garrett. He enlisted in the United States Air Force and served a tour of duty in Vietnam and returned home safely to complete 20+ years of service. He worked as a civilian for the Defense Mapping Agency in Bethesda, MD where he retired after 20 years of service in 1993. On his 80th birthday he received a letter from President Obama wishing him a happy birthday and commending him on his years of service to his country. For those of you who never got to meet John in person, you actually did get to spend time with him through all of our family members because we are a reflection of who he is. He encouraged and supported all of us in all that we did and gave us what we needed to be successful. He made all of us feel important and we got the best from John at all times."

Thank you for your service, John!

Thomas D. Elliott gave a Civil War-era gun to his grandnephew, Marine Corps Staff Sgt. David H. Stewart, because “I figured he was the most deserving,” Elliott said.

“I thought so much about him that I passed a Civil War gun that was carried by my great grandfather,” said Elliott, 75, a former Marine who lives in Clayton, Ohio.

Stewart, 34, of Stafford, Va., died Friday in Afghanistan during combat operations in Helmand province in Afghanistan, according to the Department of Defense and the Marine Corps.

Lance Cpl. Brandon J. Garabrandt, 19, of Peterborough, N.H., and Lance Cpl. Adam F. Wolff, 25, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, also were killed. All three were assigned to the 2nd Combat Engineer Battalion, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Lejeune, N.C.

The military did not release additional details, but Elliott said the three apparently were riding in a Humvee that struck an improvised explosive device.

“This is a blow,” Elliott said. “I never cried for my father, my mother. I do cry for David.”

Stewart was married and had two young children. He ran in an Air Force Marathon race two years ago at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Elliott said.

“He had a very easy going way,” he said. “He was a very handsome young man. He was into everything that he should be. …He’s the type of person I would lay my life down for.”

Stewart, a 10-year Marine Corps veteran, deployed to Afghanistan after completing a stint as a drill instructor. He was a platoon sergeant and deployed to Iraq twice. He was on his second tour of duty in Afghanistan and was promoted to staff sergeant Nov. 11, 2010, the Marine Corps said.

Garabrant, of Peterborough, N.H., was a combat engineer who joined the Marine Corps in March 2013. Wolff, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, was a combat engineer who joined the Marines in December 2012. Both deployed to Afghanistan in March.2 and was promoted to lance corporal Feb. 1, then deployed to Afghanistan in March.

"I met Major Scott Hagerty at Ft. Bragg in the winter of 2006; I was a Navy Reserve Lieutenant Commander and he was an Army Reserve Major. Scott was a gregarious person. We shared our past experiences...He had previously deployed to Iraq, where I was headed next and he provided answers to my many questions about what to expect there...Prior to completing training, we talked of getting together after our deployments, when we were both back in Stillwater. We both looked forward to bringing our wives and kids together...Scott was killed in an IED explosion in Afghanistan on June 3, 2008. I received news of his death while I was working at Victory Base in Iraq."

Today we honor Robert Jaronik of South Bend, Indiana, who fell ion June 29th, 1968. He is remembered by his daughter, Debbi:

"There was no good reason for Vietnam as we all know. Yet, my dad thought it was important and that his service there was needed. I am the oldest of his three children and was 6 yrs old when he left, 7
when he was KIA. I remember asking my dad at the airport ""why do you have to go'? He said, "to keep the bad guys from hurting the
children." What else do you tell a child? All I know is it broke my
heart and my mothers'. My dad will always be my HERO and I miss him everyday. He was in the Marine Corp 10 yrs and was proud to serve. He gave his life for this country and I make sure people know of his sacrifice. I am a very proud daughter and DoD Contractor, I have two children in the military and one who works for a company that benefits the military and their families. My mother recently joined my father in the Kingdom of Heaven. They had a love that was so very strong, only us closest to my mom knew of it and how much she missed him. He was her everything. May God Bless all who have served and continue to serve. I pray for all of us."

This month in 1967, General Westmoreland requests an additional 200,000 reinforcements on top of the 475,000 soldiers already scheduled to be sent to Vietnam, which would bring the U.S. total in Vietnam to 675,000. President Johnson agrees only to an extra 45,000. — with Peace Symbol and Ethelbert Reinhard Carpio.

#Onthisday in 1967, North Vietnam's Politburo makes the decision to launch a widespread offensive against South Vietnam. Conceived in three phases, the first involves attacks against remote border areas to lure U.S. troops away from South Vietnam's cities. The second is the Tet Offensive, an attack with hopes of overthrowing the South Vietnam government. The third involves the invasion of South Vietnam. (HISTORY)
