  13. Iraq’s crude oil reserves may turn out to be much higher than believed, the country’s oil minister Jabar al-Luaibi said at a recent industry event, timing the statement with news that it will pay foreign companies less in new contracts. Last year, Iraq updated the estimate for its proven reserves to 153 billion barrels from 143 billion barrels, but if Luaibi is right, the figure could actually be double the 2017 estimate. If the higher estimate proves true, it would make Iraq the largest oil-rich country in the world, ahead of Venezuela, which claims its reserves are just above 300 billion barrels, and also ahead of Saudi Arabia, with 260.8 billion barrels. Al-Luaibi’s remarks on the reserve estimates come amid preparations for the next oil tender in the country, which is to take place next week and offer 11 exploration blocks to foreign companies. A total 15 companies have expressed interest in bidding for the blocks in eastern and southern Iraq as the country seeks to increase its production capacity to over 5 million bpd from the current 4.35 million bpd. But it also comes as Baghdad says it will exclude oil by-productsfrom the revenue of foreign oil companies in new contracts that should be awarded in June. The end result will be reduced productive fees for foreign companies. Related: Oil Majors Should Invest In Deepwater Drilling The tender and the possible reserve update suggest Iraq does not plan to continue producing less than capacity for much longer. This is hardly a surprise: OPEC’s number-two exporter has consistently failed to fit within its production quota under the OPEC+ agreement, forcing Saudi Arabia to reduce its production by more than it had agreed. In fact, were it not for Venezuela’s uncontrollably falling output, OPEC would not have been able to meet its objective of bringing global inventories down enough to stimulate higher prices. Iraq has not made a secret of its production growth plans. The troubled country, which has yet to erase all traces of the Islamic State’s presence from its territory, depends on crude oil exports for 90 percent of its export revenue and does not have the means or options to initiate a quick economic turnaround. https://oilprice.com/Latest-Energy-News/World-News/Iraqs-Oil-Reserves-May-Be-Much-Higher-Than-Thought.html

  16. US troops will pull out of Syria “very soon” to “let other people take care” of the situation in the country, said President Donald Trump on Thursday. “We’re knocking the hell out of ISIS. We’ll be coming out of Syria, like, very soon,” Trump revealed during a speech in Ohio. "Let the other people take care of it now.” However, he noted that the US-led Coalition is going to retake “100 percent of the caliphate” from the Islamic State (IS) soon. Trump complained about the spendings by the US on Syria, but he also touted US’ military advances against the Islamic State in the region, as reported by Politico. “We got to get back to our country where we belong, where we want to be,” he said. http://www.basnews.com/index.php/en/news/middle-east/425697
  17. ERBIL, Kurdistan Region (Kurdistan 24) – Discussions about the upcoming parliamentary elections in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region led Thursday’s meeting in Erbil with Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani and United Nations Representative to Iraq Ján Kubiš. As the May 12 votes approach, Kubiš said international efforts to create a suitable ground for the Iraqi elections are ongoing but stressed the need for a consensus of all Iraqi political parties, including the signing of a code of honor. Prime Minister Barzani said it was important that the elections were held on time, calling on Baghdad to facilitate the return of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) from the Kurdistan Region to their homes, according to a statement following the meeting. He added that some of the IDPs who were previously taken back to their liberated areas by the Iraqi government had returned to camps in the Kurdistan Region because of the lack of services and security in the regions. The KRG Prime Minister urged the Iraqi government to secure services and provide facilities for the return of IDPs ahead of the elections. The Region has provided a haven for nearly two million displaced persons and refugees from other parts of Iraq and Syria since the emergence of the Islamic State in mid-2014. (Photo: KRG) Regarding ties between the KRG and the Iraqi government, Kubiš said he was happy with the progress being made since relations went sour following Kurdistan’s historic Sep. 25 independence referendum, and hoped the relations continue to improve. Baghdad ignored the results of the vote, where over 92 percent supported secession from Iraq, and responded by imposing a set of punitive measures on the Kurdistan Region. The embargos included an international flight ban on airports in Kurdistan as well as the use of the military to force Peshmerga from disputed territories, notably in Kirkuk on Oct. 16. Prime Minister Barzani acknowledged the progress made between Erbil and Baghdad, adding that the central government knows the demands of the people of Kurdistan and their desire to move forward peacefully http://www.iraqnow.news/articles/10736
