After the announcement on Sunday by Iran minister of economy that the government intends to redenominate the currency by removing three zeros, today the governor of the Central Bank of Iran (CBI) told reporters that the intention is to remove four zeros, and not three, making one rial approximately equal to one dollar. The CBI governor said the legislative framework for redenomination of the currency would be readied within six months. He said removing four zeros from the current unit would eliminate the need for CBI to print increasingly large denomination notes. The reason given by CBI for the necessity of removing four zeros follow the logic offered by many of our commentators, including our own Amir Taheri, that the removal of zeros is for convenience. People would no longer need to carry large amounts of money with them, and that in practical terms there are already bank cheques in wide use that function as large denomination bills. The critics point out that such drastic redenomination is usually a step taken after a period of high inflation is ended and there are no expectations for a period of renewed inflation, and Iran does not meet the criteria as the gradual removal of government subsidies are expected to create a long period of high inflation. Besides, the establishment of electronic money transfer system renders large paper bills or cheques unnecessary.

Sadrist takes over Iraq planning ministry Monday, April 4th 2011 6:02 PM Baghdad, April 4 (AKnews)- In its 51th session Monday, the Iraqi parliament voted by majority to Ali Yusif Abdul-Nabi as the new planning minister. The ministry was run by Nsar Rubei, the Minister for Labour and Social Affairs since Dec.21, when part of the new cabinet of the reinstated Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki was entrusted. Jawad Shahili, a lawmaker told AKnews the majority of lawmakers voted to Abdul-Nabi, from Ahrar party, a rank of Sadr Current, as the new planning minister. Allocation of some other ministries as interior, national security and defense is still suspended due to disputes over candidates and power-share. Maliki’s office announced earlier today that the PM has submitted the names of the candidates for some of the suspended ministries to parliament; Ibrahim Lami for Interior Ministry, Khalid Mutab Obeidi for Defense, and Ali Yusif for Planning. The most disputed ministries are the interior and defense. Though almost all the parties have agreed for Maliki’s bloc, the National Coalition to take over interior and for the rival bloc, al-Iraqiya to assume the other ministry, neither blocs so far have agreed on the candidates of each other. The meeting of the opposition parties will also likely focus on the group’s boycott of Monday’s parliamentary session. After repetitive calls to summon the Kurdish interior and peshamrga (Kurdish armed forces) ministers, the opposition and Sulaimaniya public expected the two appear in parliament Monday to justify their position with regard to security forces’ exercising violence against the protesting public. But they did not attend the session. The protests in Sulaimaniya have taken into 47th day. In the early days of the protests and even in the past week the protesters faced violence. Some nine people had been killed and over 250 wounded since the outbreak of violence Feb.17. The protesters also hope to hear a convincing justification from peshmarga minister for expediting Kurdish troops to Sulaimaniya shortly after Feb.17.
