Iraq Executes 42 IS Militants in Nasiriyah

ERBIL — the Iraqi authorities executed 42 Islamic State (IS) militants, convicted of terrorism for killing members of the security forces and conducting deadly attacks in the country.

The decision of the court to execute the 42 militants affiliated with the extremist group, came after suicide attacks killed at least 60 people near the southern Iraqi city of Nasiriyah earlier this month.

According to a statement made by the Justice Ministry on Sunday, the militants had been hanged at a prison in Nasiriyah (located about 200 kilometers northwest of Basrah city) three months after 14 other IS militants were executed following the same convictions.

The IS extremist group emerged in Iraq back in 2014, forcing hundreds of thousands of civilians to flee their hometowns and killing thousands more. However, since October 2016 the Iraqi and Peshmerga forces backed by the US-led Coalition have been fighting the group, recapturing over 90% of the seized territories.
