Iraq demands car makers to open local branches by 2012

12/06/2011 16:58

Erbil, June 12 (AKnews) – Car companies must open branches by 2012 if they want to sell cars in Iraq, the Trade Ministry announced today.

Currently, cars are imported through agents in neighboring Gulf States. These intermediate imports will be prohibited by the end of the year.

With the new law, the government tries to reduce car prices, a spokesman for the ministry said.

Japanese car maker Toyota was notified today that it has six to seven months to comply with the new regulation. Similar messages will be sent the other companies who sell cars in Iraq.

The companies will also be called on to open repair shops

There are no exact numbers of how many cars are there in Iraq. In the Kurdistan Region alone, the government estimated around 850,000 cars in 2010.
