Shafaq News/ The United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) described, on Sunday, the visit of the Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations in Iraq and the head of the mission, Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, to Iran today, as part of the mission's work in facilitating dialogue and cooperation between the countries of the region.

Today, Sunday, Blaskhart paid a visit to the capital, Tehran, at the head of a delegation from the (UNAMI) mission, and met with Foreign Minister Hussein Amir Abdullahian.

The UN mission told Shafaq News agency, "This visit is in line with the mandate of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) to facilitate regional dialogue and cooperation on a number of issues to support Iraq. The Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations has previously visited a number of countries in the region." .

Blaskhart had recently visited Türkiye. Before that, the mission visited Jordan, Kuwait and a number of countries in the region.

According to the mandate given to the mission by the UN Security Council: “The Special Representative of the Secretary-General and UNAMI shall provide advice, support and assistance to the Government of Iraq on facilitating regional dialogue and cooperation, including on matters of border security, clearance of landmines, improvised explosive devices and explosive remnants of war, energy, trade, environment, water, adverse effects of climate change especially those contributing to desertification and drought, building resilience, infrastructure, public health, and refugees.”

In turn, Fars News Agency reported that Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian discussed today in the capital, Tehran, with the representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations in Iraq, Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, the latest developments in Iraq.

The Iranian agency indicated that this is Plasschaert's first visit to Tehran during the current Iranian government, as her previous visit was for two days to Tehran in January 2020.

On December 1, the representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations in Iraq, Jenin Hennis-Plasschaert, met with the Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Baghdad, Muhammad Kazem Al Sadiq, and in this meeting they discussed the latest political developments in Iraq and ways to support the government of Muhammad Shia al-Sudani and stabilize and security of the country.

Plasschaert stressed in this meeting, referring to the positive role of cooperation between Iran and Iraq, that this cooperation brought stability to the region and should continue.

Blaskhart also met in Najaf last December, the religious authority, Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani.

It is noteworthy that the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, appointed, in August 2018, Jeanine Plasschaert as his special representative in Iraq and head of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI), and she assumed her position on December 17, 2018, thus succeeding Jan Kubis.

Iran directs a request to the United Nations regarding the Kurdish opposition parties in Iraq

Baghdad - Nas

In a meeting with a UN official, the Iranian ambassador to Baghdad, Muhammad Kazem Al Sadeq, demanded the cooperation of the United Nations in what he described as "the disarmament of Kurdish parties opposing the regime of the Islamic Republic in Iraq."

And according to the Iranian News Agency, that Muhammad Kazem Al Sadiq said, in an interview with "Jenin Hennis-Plasschaert," the Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations in Iraq, that "the Kurdish parties opposed to the Islamic Republic are active in the Kurdistan region of Iraq, calling on the United Nations to cooperate with the Islamic Republic to establish Security on Iran's Borders.

And the Iranian agency quoted that "the representative of the United Nations stressed that Iran and Iraq must have" the greatest degree of coordination and cooperation "in the field of security issues."

During the recent visit of the United Nations Special Envoy to Iran and her meeting with Foreign Minister Hussein Amir Abdollahian, "views were exchanged on the Iran-Iraq security agreement and the disarmament of Kurdish parties opposing the Islamic Republic."

In that meeting, Amir Abdullahian stressed "the importance of this issue (the presence of the opposition Kurdish parties in Iraq) for Iran, and stressed the need to disarm it."

Iran has demanded several times that the government of Iraq and the Kurdistan region "disarm the Kurdish parties stationed in the Kurdistan region, otherwise it will attack their camps inside Iraqi territory."

Ali Shamkhani, the former secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, signed "a security agreement with his Iraqi counterpart last March, a large part of which was allocated to the Kurdish parties opposing the Iranian regime in the Kurdistan region and an emphasis on their disarmament."

Since that time, the Iranian regime's authorities have repeatedly asked the Iraqi authorities to "comply with the provisions of this agreement."

The Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces, Mohammad Bagheri, threatened that "if the governments of Iraq and the Kurdistan region do not implement the terms of the agreement, the Islamic Republic will intensify its operations against these opposition parties."
