umbertino
The military has seized power again in Myanmar. Despite the electoral success of Aung San Suu Kyi’s party last November (or, perhaps, because of it), the civilian leader was arrested this morning, just ten years after her release in November 2010, and her government ousted. Suu Kyi’s desire to work with the army, to the point of abandoning some political prisoners to their fate and remaining silent in the face of the atrocities against the Rohingyas, has not been enough: the military, anxious after its failed March 2020 attempt to democratise the constitution, wants both political and economic control, though it already controls many levers of power — as this report showed, a year after Suu Kyi was first elected ‘A personality cult but that’s how we operate’ Myanmar’s one-woman democracy The military have stepped back, but are not completely gone. For now, the Burmese population are still counting on their adored historical opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi Monday 1 February 2021 https://mondediplo.com/2017/01/09myanmar https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rohingya_people
