Death of New Yorker, whose secret to long life was plenty of sleep and no alcohol, means just one person born in 19th century still lives

.....

Thomas Scharf, professor of social gerontology at Newcastle University, said that as the general population ages the likes of Morano should be celebrated and learnt from. “Within 30 to 40 years there will be half a million people over 100 [in the UK] and there will be more people on that list of super-centenarians,” he said.

'Staying single is why I'm the world's oldest person'

Aged 116, Emma Morano, who attributes her extraordinarily long life to staying single and eating two raw eggs a day, has become the oldest person in the world.

Published: 13 May 2016 10:37 GMT+02:00

Morano takes the crown following the death of American Susannah Mushatt Jones, who was four months her senior. Jones passed away in New York on Thursday.

In spite of her advanced years Moreno still lives independently in her small, two-roomed home overlooking Lake Maggiore in Verbania, Piedmont.

She does not require any home help, but is visited each morning by one of her relatives who helps prepare her meals.

In the past she has put her extraordinary longevity down to the two raw eggs she drinks each day.

“I have three eggs a day, two raw and one cooked,” she said, explaining that she had started to consume the raw eggs after her doctor diagnosed her with anaemia 90 years ago.

She also credits the fact that she has been single since she separated from her husband in 1939 as another important factor contributing to her extraordinarily long life.

“I didn't want to be controlled by anyone anymore,” she explained during an interview with the New York Times last year.

Born on November 29th 1899, Morano is the only known person left on earth to have been born in the 19th century.

Until 1954, she worked in a local factory which produced jute – the fabric used to make burlap. She then spent 20 years working in the kitchens of a nearby boarding school until retiring in 1974.

Three years ago, when she was declared he oldest woman in Europe, aged 114, she told La Stampa she was surprised to have made it so far.

“Who would have thought it?” she mused. “I don't know what to tell, for you...it's fascinating, obviously, but for me it's just another day.”

What a couple of beauties. From horse n buggy to landing on the moon, through all the computer nonsense of Y2K, Hitler, etc.

My aunt lived into her 90s. She talked about the fall of '29, Hitler, and smoking weed to get ready to go to a new year's eve party. She was fascinating and one of my favorite relatives. Lived thru prohibition, would talk about speak easys and after hour clubs. What she did when there was no work, to stay alive. I think she was married about 7 times.

Great post, Umberto

Yeah, its so incredible to see such people and their experiences! The world is changing before our very lives, but how much has world changed before THEIR eyes is unbelievable! Malzol Tof to them all.

Recently, an Israeli university did a study to see if there was any common denominator to these old folks. The results are rather funny: NOT A THING! Hahahaha. Seems it is really just luck of the draw.  They did fine some genetic-links, but overall, you're dealt aces or you aint. However, how WELL you live can be influenced by so many factors. So I concentrate on those things, Might die tomorrow, but I will be looking good and feeling fine when I punch my card-that is my goal.

To ALL yours health......Live good and live well

Forgot to mention, Ms. Moreno is real old school libertarian! Love it when she said, "Never wants to be dominated...." That's right! We can all learn a lesson on that: No one has the right to tell you what to do. But those psychopaths in government sure think they have that right. Go, grandma! Live FREE! Dunno, just saying.....Peace
