The Death of Marat (French: La Mort de Marat or Marat Assassiné) is a painting by Jacques-Louis David of the murdered French revolutionary leader Jean-Paul Marat. It is one of the most famous images of the Revolution. David was the leading French painter, as well as a Montagnard and a member of the revolutionary Committee of General Security. The painting shows the radical journalist lying dead in his bath on 13 July 1793 after his murder by Charlotte Corday. Painted in the months after Marat's murder, it has been described by T. J. Clark as the first modernist painting, for "the way it took the stuff of politics as its material, and did not transmute it".

 

The murder

Marat (24 May 1743 – 13 July 1793) was one of the leaders of the Montagnards, the radical faction ascendant in French politics during the Reign of Terror until the Thermidorian Reaction. Charlotte Corday was a Girondin from a minor aristocratic family and a political enemy of Marat who blamed him for the September Massacre. She gained entrance to Marat's rooms with a note promising details of a counter-revolutionary ring in Caen. Marat suffered from eczema that caused him to spend time in his bathtub where he would bathe in oatmeal; he would often work there. Corday fatally stabbed Marat, though she did not attempt to flee. She was later tried and executed for the murder.

Gunman with hatchet killed at Mad Max screening in Nashville suburb, authorities say

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — A suspect is dead after officers responded to reports of shots fired during a Mad Max screening at a movie theatre southeast of Nashville, Tennessee, police said Wednesday.

The suspect, who was not identified, was armed with a gun and a hatchet at the Carmike Hickory 8 theatre in Antioch, said Don Aaron, a spokesman for Metro Nashville police. One person may have suffered a hatchet wound, he said. The extent of that person’s injuries or whether others were wounded was not immediately clear.

Aaron said an officer came into the theatre and was fired upon by the suspect. The officer shot back, then backed off. After that, a SWAT team came in, and there was another exchange of gunfire. The suspect was then found dead.

The suspect had two backpacks, which are being checked by authorities.

Video from the scene showed a heavy presence at the theatre, with local, state and federal officers setting up a perimeter in the parking lot. A wide area was roped off with yellow police tape, and at least one ambulance was outside the theatre. Many officers were heavily armed.

 

The theater in Antioch is near Global Mall, a shopping centre in a middle-class neighbourhood.

The latest shooting comes about two weeks after a gunman opened fire inside a movie theatre in Lafayette, Louisiana, during a screening of the film “Trainwreck.” Police said John Russell Houser killed two people and wounded nine others before fatally shooting himself.

Haas said further details would need to be released by police.

The suspect was arrested after the train stopped in Arras, 185km north of Paris, Interior Ministry spokesman Pierre-Henri Brandet said on French television BFM. Passengers were evacuated and police have secured the area.

Passengers on the train subdued the gunman and prevented further carnage, said Christophe Piednoel, spokesman for national railway operator SNCF. The train was then diverted to Arras, where police arrested the suspect, Piednoel said on French television i-Tele.

Investigators from France's special anti-terror police are leading the investigation, a spokeswoman for the Paris prosecutor's office said.

The attack took place while the train was passing through Belgium, according to a statement from the office Presidend Francois Hollande. Hollande said he's spoken with Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel and the two leaders pledged to cooperate closely on the investigation.

Two of the victims were in critical condition, according to a statement from Hollande's office.

The suspect is a 26-year-old Moroccan, said Sliman Hamzi, an official with police union Alliance, said on French television i-Tele.

The suspect was armed with an automatic rifle and a knife, Piednoel said.

France's interior minister Bernard Cazeneuve was en route to Arras.

NEW YORK — ABC moved quickly to land one of the three men who foiled a terror attack on a Paris-bound train last month for the 21st season cast of "Dancing With The Stars."

The network announced Wednesday that Spc. Alek Skarlatos, who overpowered a gun-toting man last month with his friends Spencer Stone and Anthony Sadler, will be in the dancing competition that is scheduled to begin Sept. 14.

Chef Paula Deen, actor Gary Busey and Bindi Irwin, actress-daughter of the late wildlife TV star Steve Irwin, are among the other cast members.

The terrorists like to dance as well although their participants are not as willing as the Americans.

Alek Skarlatos took time to pay tribute to the victims of last week's shooting at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, Oregon.

The Dancing with the Stars contestant shared his grief during Monday's broadcast. The shooting, in which a gunman identified as 26-year-old Chris Harper Mercer killed nine people, was particularly painful for Skarlatos, who has strong ties to the college, where he would have been attending classes the day of the shooting had he not been competing on DWTS.
