caughtinthecrossfire
Yota, ty for this one. I truly hope this recognition continues and encourages the rest of Iraq to realize they are better off by supporting (and imitating the actions of) the Kurdish regions. I feel that, although many Kurds may still prefer independence, this type of recognition could foster a national pride that Iraq needs to move forward. I cannot imagine the insecurity that most citizens must feel about Iraq's sovereignty. Maliki deeply damaged the country's confidence in becoming more than it is or currently was(especially in terms of corruption). This public show of respect towards peshmerga along with the new PM's seemingly genuine attitude of unity really leaves me feeling much more hopeful for progress in all aspects, not just oil production. Iraq needs a sense of national pride and accomplishment now. I don't think they've had that since they cast their first democratic vote years ago. We shall see. Again, Yota, thanks. yota691
bottom link from the top article... Over 700 Peshmerga troops have died in Iraq in war with IS JIHADISTS IRAQ | 10 de diciembre de 2014 Ampliar Members of Iraq's Kurdish Peshmerga forces arriving to Sirnak, Turkey, from where they crossed into Syria to reinforce defenses in the Kurdish city of Kobani. EFE/Str Baghdad, Dec 10 (EFE).- A total of 727 members of the Kurdish Peshmerga forces have died since June in fighting with the Islamic State, IS, jihadist group in Iraq, the government of the autonomous region of Iraqi Kurdistan announced Wednesday. In a statement, the so-called Ministry of the Peshmerga noted that around 3,564 Kurdish fighters have been wounded in the conflict. Another 34 Peshmerga members are missing, according to the statement which was reported by Kurdish media. The casualties occurred in clashes in several provinces of Iraq such as Nineveh, Saladin, Kirkuk and Diyala, all in the northern half of the country. The Kurdish and Iraqi forces, backed by aircraft of the U.S.-led international coalition, are trying to expel the IS jihadists from the northern region which the radical group seized in June. The Kurds in Nineveh province that borders the Kurdistan region have showed stiff resistance in fighting the jihadists and managed to achieve several victories, including gaining back control of the Mosul Dam. Kirkuk, meanwhile, has been defended by the Peshmerga since June after the Iraqi army and police fled the city before the advance of the jihadists. The radicals spent months at the gates of the oil town, which is considered one of the traditional areas of conflict between the Iraqi government and the Kurds. Iraqi Kurdistan has also sent groups of Peshmerga to the Syrian Kurdish enclave of Kobani to help prevent the IS jihadists from taking over the town.
