UK raises threat level to 'severe' over ISIS

The United Kingdom on Friday raised its terror threat level to “severe” amid growing concern over the dangers posed by fighters from the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria.

British Prime Minister David Cameron condemned ISIS as he announced the decision and vowed that the UK would not ignore threats to its homeland.

Cameron said the United Kingdom was facing a "greater and deeper threat to our security than we have known before."

"The root cause of this threat to our security is quite clear — It is a poisonous ideology of Islamist extremism that is condemned by all faiths and by all faith leaders," Cameron added.

The “severe” threat level is the second-highest on the scale, above “substantial” but below “critical,” which designates a situation where an attack is imminently expected. The UK is now at its highest alert in three years.

Cameron said the decision was made by the UK's joint terrorism analysis center.

The British leader called for a "comprehensive approach" to combating the Islamic extremists who have taken over large swaths of Iraq and Syria in recent months. Fears have also grown that fighters with the group who have western passports could return to attack their home countries.

At least 500 British citizens had gone to Syria and potentially Iraq to fight with Islamic militants, Cameron said. He also noted the brutal murder of American journalist James Foley, reportedly at the hands of a British ISIS fighter.

Cameron’s announcement comes one day after President Obama faced criticism for his approach to ISIS.

During a White House briefing Thursday evening, Obama said “we don’t have a strategy yet.”

Administration officials were quick to jump into damage-control mode, with press secretary Josh Earnest insisting that Obama was only referring "to military options for striking" ISIS.

"Those options are still being developed by the Pentagon," Earnest said.

Obama has authorized strikes on ISIS in Iraq but is weighing whether to expand those operations to hit the group’s foothold in Syria.

I watched that press ordeal with the PM this morning... I kept hoping to hear something that resembled a backbone, but it was a complete waste of time. The PM was asked "Are you taking military action?" and the PM deflected.

Absolutely pathetic.

They aren't doing anything more than we (Obama's America) are doing, and all that does is give ISIS more time to grow bigger and stronger.

It's going to get worse before it gets better. ISIS is a terrible evil that MUST be dealt with aggressively... and I don't mean "aggressively sending money and supplies".

The British minister said in a statement that "raising the level of preparedness is linked to developments in Syria and Iraq, where terrorist groups are planning attacks against the West."

It confirmed that "some of these plans is likely to engage the foreign fighters have gone to this region come from Britain and Europe to participate in the conflicts."

For his part, British Prime Minister David Cameron told a news conference, "It will take additional steps to prevent people from traveling to Syria and Iraq to fight there.

Cameron urged the international community to fight against extremism and terrorism, saying that the risk of organizing "Daash" in Iraq and Syria threatens the whole of Europe.

Across Cameron expressed worry over the state regulation to Lebanon and Jordan, but he said that that organization will not achieve its objectives at the end of Alomr.anthy

UK is saying that they will button up their borders & combat ISIS inside their country.

How is that supporting anyone in the fight against this threat?

No troops sent, no weapon, ammo, equipment given. You will continue intelligence operations? LOL

UK is sounding much like the rest of the world - moral support. Oh goody :(

There are times when evil must be deal with with forces that destroy lives, equipment, and financial support.  They only understand physical force.  The continued delay only makes future confrontations (battles) more difficult.  We (USA) have lost our respect in the world because of our inattention to threats from the likes of ISIS.

Unless the US government (present administration)  declares a state of war on ISIS and aggressively challenges their power, authority, and evil intents with a violent overthrow of their leadership immediately, by the end of  the year it may be too late.
