elmstreet61
The Australian Wheat board was taken by surprise (a pleasant surprise) yesterday, when the Iraqi government contacted them to let them know that the iraqis are ready and willing to finally pay for wheat sales in the 1980's that were left unpaid. it just tells me that Iraq is really doing all it can to be seen as a responsible world citizen....and repaying any and all debts, when in its power do do so. Nice one, Iraq!!! it could not have come at a better time, as our farmers are doing it tough. the full story here: http://www.weeklytimesnow.com.au/article/2012/04/03/465371_grain-and-hay.html and here: http://www.iraq-businessnews.com/tag/australia-wheat-board/ Go Iraq!! Go away Chapter 7....and.......Go RV!
uncirculd
This is another good sign. They are balancing the books. One of the things Shabibi discussed with IMF when giving his plan. Paying off debt.
smee2
This kind of post is invaluable ! We are looking toward the RV but there are so many aspects to that happening that we just cannot keep juggling all those balls at once. Sometimes it is good to step back and just listen, or in this case read, some of what the Iraqis are learning of their own government and its actions. This step definitely gives the people of Iraq a way to feel they are no longer the butt of the universe. They have just put on a show for the Arab nations, and successfully at that, and now they are paying long overdue debt. This is a great start to getting out of the hole they may feel they are in and will start giving them the confidence to handle the RV when it happens. They need to have faith in their government ... a stretch, I know ... but it is important that the ordinary people of Iraq feel they are in some way contributing, we all need that. This kind of post also gives us a broader feel for what is happening. Thanks for posting! smee2

MikeRite
It's probably a small dept that has more value in helping Iraq look good to the UN.

unirod
IMO; Since Iraq is at the end flows of the great rivers, water security will always be in question regardless of any treaties or flow guarantees. Paying delinquent bills due grain suppliers will help Iraq to feed it's people in the future with imports. Hopefully Iraq will be able to meet it's own food demand.
