SULAIMANI – Speaker of Iraqi Parliament, Salim Jabouri has expressed support for an operation Ankara seeks to launch on Iraq soil against Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), reported Turkey's state-run news agency Anadolu.

Turkish Foreign Minister, Mevlut Cavusoglu said on March 8 that Ankara and Baghdad will carry out a joint operation against the PKK in the Kurdistan Region.

Anadolu cited Jabouri at a meeting with his Turkish counterpart as saying “We are definitely against the existence of terror organizations, especially the PKK there (Kurdistan Region), which can harm Turkey and the region.”

Ankara and Baghdad would be in “full cooperation” to jointly defeat terrorism, Anadolu quoted Jabouri.

Cavusoglu said the anti-PKK operation may start after Iraq’s parliamentary elections scheduled for May 2018.

Turkey resumed the shelling of suspected PKK positions inside the Kurdistan Region in July 2015 after a two-year ceasefire between the Turkish military and the PKK came to an end.

Those airstrikes destroyed villages and agricultural areas across the region’s northern border with Turkey.

The conflict between Turkey and the PKK has continued for over 25 years and has claimed more than 40,000 lives.

The PKK has waged a decades-long armed struggle against Turkey’s government for greater autonomy and cultural rights for the country’s Kurdish population.
