RJG
Iraqi Parliament Holds Session to Elect Speaker, Four Candidates Compete for Position PoliticsbreakingParliamentNew PresidentElection session 2024-10-31 08:25 Share font Shafaq News/ The Iraqi Parliament began, on Thursday, holding a session to elect a new speaker to succeed Mohammed al-Halbousi, who was dismissed by the judiciary. Shafaq News Agency correspondent said that Mohsen Al-Mandalawi, the acting head of the council, opened the session after the legal quorum was completed with the attendance of 195 council members. During the session, Al-Mandlawi announced the completion of the procedures for electing the Speaker of the House of Representatives. Four candidates are competing for the position of Council Chairman: Salem Al-Issawi, Talal Al-Zubaie, Mahmoud Al-Mashhadani, and Amer Abdul-Jabbar. Al-Mashhadani is the most likely candidate for this position, as he confirmed earlier today that he is the majority candidate of the Sunni blocs for the position of Speaker of the House of Representatives. Al-Mashhadani told Shafaq News Agency, "I am the candidate of the majority and the Sunni majority for the position of Speaker of the House of Representatives," adding, "We ask the national space to support us in today's session." He added that the House of Representatives will resolve this issue in today's session and finish it. An informed source in the Progress bloc, headed by Mohammed al-Halbousi, stated on Thursday that the latter had agreed with the head of the State of Law Coalition, Nouri al-Maliki, to support Mahmoud al-Mashhadani for the position of Speaker of the House of Representatives, and to proceed with holding the parliamentary session scheduled for that, even if it was late today. The source told Shafaq News Agency that the heads of the political blocs held a meeting headed by Al-Maliki and Al-Halbousi, in which they discussed supporting the candidate Mahmoud Al-Mashhadani for the position of Speaker of Parliament. He explained that those present at the meeting stressed that today's session would be held even if it was late at night and that the council president would be elected. The source continued by saying: The political leaders will attend the House of Representatives building in the coming hours to resolve the issue of electing the president. The Iraqi Parliament has allocated the session scheduled to be held this afternoon to elect a new Speaker of the Council, to succeed Mohammed al-Halbousi, whose membership ended about a year ago. Last Wednesday, October 23, six Sunni forces, led by the head of the Progress Party, Mohammed al-Halbousi, identified two paths to decide on the election of a new speaker of parliament, after a stalemate that lasted for 11 months. This came in a joint statement by (Progress, National Masses, Al-Hasm, Iraqi National Project, Al-Sadara, and Al-Mubadara). According to the statement, these forces confirmed that there are two paths and no third, the first is that all competing parties withdraw their candidates, and that all national forces present commit to supporting the candidate (Mahmoud Al-Mashhadani), who has received the support of the Sunni parliamentary and political majority. The second option, according to the statement, is to take legal measures in the House of Representatives to nominate a new candidate from the Sunni political majority, supported by a large parliamentary majority, to preserve the right of the Sunni majority to nominate their representative for this position. On Monday, October 28, the Coordination Framework for Shiite Forces announced an agreement to hold a session to elect a new Speaker of Parliament today, Thursday. https://shafaq.com/ar/سیاسة/البرلمان-العراقي-يعقد-جلسة-انتخاب-ر-يس-له-6 1
