Biden and Trump wield their swords

A state of political tension and violence in the country in recent years A state of political tension and violence in the country in recent years

Not since the Civil War (1861-1865) has an American president warned his citizens that the country faces an existential threat posed by another segment of citizens and not an external enemy, as President Biden did last Thursday evening, in a speech he gave in the historic city of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, which was The US Constitution was drafted and signed by the founders of the American Republic. President Biden was clear about the identity of the threat and its source when he said, "Donald Trump and radical Republicans represent the kind of extremism that threatens the very foundation of our republic." (Biden used Trump's acronym: MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN MAGA in his reference to extremists.)

The accusation is dangerous and remarkable for more than one reason, most notably the depth of the wide chasm separating the extremist base that still clings to former President Trump and rejects the legitimacy of Biden's election, and Democrats and other Americans who see Trump and his base as a direct threat to American democracy. What makes the accusation also remarkable is that it came from a president who was known for his political moderation during his long service as a senator, and as a candidate who campaigned in the name of trying to rebuild national unity, and to restore the spirit to traditional political compromises between the two parties.

It is true that the Republicans exaggerated their criticism of Biden, and some accused him that his speech was a “declaration of war” on the Republicans, while others demanded that he apologize for “insulting” Republican voters, but the truth is that Biden was waging a war on those leaders in the Republican Party in Congress and outside of it. Those who continue to support Trump or support his re-election, or who accept Trump's lies and misinformation that Biden's election was not legitimate. Biden was clear when he differentiated between Trump and his extremist base, and between traditional Republicans when he said, "Not all Republicans - not the majority of Republicans - are extremists. Not every Republican believes in this extremist ideology," noting that he knows this from his experience and his previous cooperation with traditional Republicans. in Congress.

During his first year in the White House, President Biden neglected to mention his predecessor by name, and was referring to him as "my predecessor" or "the other ex-person", as he avoided attacking Trump directly, in order not to enhance his value and weight, which exposed him to criticism from the progressive wing. in his party. But with the various judicial and parliamentary investigations into the violations of the former president revealed very disturbing facts and information, including Trump hiding dozens of boxes of secret documents in his residence, and with his remaining dominant figure in the Republican Party and various indications that he intends to run for the presidency, Biden saw that the time had come. To be frank with the Americans about the nature of the danger facing the country. Days before his speech in Philadelphia, Biden described the philosophy of Trump and his extremist supporters as "quasi-fascist", which exposed him to fierce criticism from Republican leaders who claimed that he accused all Republicans of being fascist sympathizers.

The irony of Republican reactions to the slap of fascism that Biden addressed to them, is that they completely forgot the heinous accusations that President Trump was leveling against American groups simply because he did not agree with their political positions. For example, Trump has described those Americans who seek to get rid of racist symbols of the Confederacy (such as statues of leaders of the separatist movement that blew up the Civil War) as "angry mobs" who seek to impose "radical left fascism" or lead a "left cultural revolution". During an event at the White House, Trump bragged that he had defeated "the extreme left: Marxists, anarchists, agitators and looters."

To give his accusations to Trump an official and dangerous dimension, Biden decided to announce them in a speech to the nation in the evening, and in front of Independence Hall in Philadelphia, while standing in front of American flags and a guard of Marines. The speech came three days before Labor Day, the traditional start date for the last leg of the campaign leading up to the midterm elections in November. Biden's decision to confront Trump and his extremists at this time means, among other things, an attempt to isolate him from some leaders of the Republican Party in Congress, and from some Republican candidates who do not want President Trump to turn into a heavy stone hanging around their necks.

The first Republican reactions to Biden's speech were a mixture of exaggerated boos, behaving as innocent victims and accusing Biden of fomenting political polarization for electoral gain, prompting Biden to "clarify" his criticism of Trump's extremist base, such as saying that he does not view any Trump supporter as a threat to his country. The country, even if he repeats that he criticizes every citizen who calls for political violence, rejects the peaceful transfer of power and does not recognize the legitimacy of the elections.

As usual, Trump, with his recklessness and extremism, was quick to justify the essence of President Biden's speech when he followed him to Pennsylvania to attack him in his first speech since the search of his headquarters in Mar-a-Lago, Florida. (FBI) and the Department of Justice "evil monsters." As usual, Trump repeated that the Democrats stole the election from him. Trump has said that if he wins the election in 2024, he will pardon the extremists and racists who stormed the Capitol in January 2021 to nullify the election results.

Since the search of his headquarters and the recovery of confidential documents, Trump continues to incite against the Ministry of Justice and its agencies, warning of violence if the campaign against him does not stop. Never has a current or former US president attacked official agencies such as the Department of Justice or the Federal Bureau of Investigation with such ferocity. Some Republican leaders were quick to distance themselves from this dangerous escalation of Trump, which showed that President Biden's accusations against him and his extremist supporters were justified and valid.

This is the electoral landscape 65 days before the midterm elections. Biden and Trump's speeches confirm the depth of the political division in the country and its danger to its future. This division, with its political, ideological, cultural, and social aspects, reminds some historians and analysts of the divisions and polarizations that prevailed in the United States in the years preceding the Civil War. This does not mean that the United States is on the path to a new civil war. But it means that the state of political tension and violence that the country has witnessed in the past years, and the lack of confidence of a large segment of Americans in the credibility and effectiveness of their official institutions, will continue to weigh heavily on the chest of the American body politic for the foreseeable future.
