Abdul Wahed: What happened yesterday is evidence of the fear of the power parties in the region from the voice of the people

{Local: Al Furat News} The head of the Kurdish New Generation bloc, Sarwa Abdel Wahed, pointed out on Sunday that what happened yesterday is evidence of the fear of the power parties in the region from the voice of the people.

"Yesterday's demonstrations in Sulaymaniyah were popular demonstrations, like others that are taking place in the streets of Baghdad, calling for services and an adjustment of the economic situation," Abdul Wahed said in a press conference.

She added, "The authorities in the region suppressed the demonstrations, although the calls were for peaceful protest," noting that "more than 600 detainees were arrested by the security forces in the region in all the cities of the region."

Abdul Wahed indicated, "The demonstrations in the region will continue until the demands of the people in the Kurdistan region are fulfilled," noting that "what happened yesterday is evidence of the fear of the power parties in the region from the voice of the people."

The US Embassy issues a strongly worded statement towards the regional authorities regarding the suppression of the demonstrations

{International: Al Furat News} Today, Monday, the US Embassy in Baghdad issued a strongly worded statement towards the region's authorities regarding the suppression of demonstrations in the Sulaymaniyah Governorate.

In a statement, Al-Furat News received a copy of it: "We are concerned about reports that talk about the use of tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse demonstrators and arrest journalists, civil society activists and members of parliament in the Kurdistan region of Iraq during the protests and the period before them, in Sulaymaniyah on 6 Father".

For democracy to succeed, governments must protect the human rights and universal freedoms guaranteed by the constitution, including freedom of peaceful assembly and demonstration, freedom of expression, the right to a fair trial and due process, as well as the right of journalists to practice their work freely and without interference.

The embassy urged the authorities of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq to "review these measures and reaffirm the vital roles that a free press, peaceful assembly and the rule of law play in the democratic process."

Security forces in the city of Sulaymaniyah , in the Kurdistan region of Iraq, on Saturday, August 6, fired tear gas to disperse hundreds of demonstrators who had gathered in the city center to protest against corruption and poor living conditions, and briefly arrested deputies from a Kurdish opposition party who had called for the demonstration.

The "New Generation" party, a Kurdish opposition party, called for a demonstration in the city of Sulaymaniyah, the second largest city in the region, to denounce corruption and the decline in freedoms.

Before the demonstration began, dozens of police cars were deployed in the city center in northern Iraq .

As soon as hundreds began to gather in the place, the security forces fired tear gas and rubber bullets at them to disperse them, according to an AFP correspondent, pointing out that the security forces prevented journalists from using their cameras to film.

Deputies arrested

As they were heading to the demonstration, the region's security forces arrested six party deputies in the Iraqi parliament in Erbil and Sulaymaniyah, according to Sarwa Abdul Wahed, head of the "New Generation" bloc in the Iraqi parliament. The representative of the regional parliament in the city of Rania was also arrested.

All the deputies were released a few hours later, Abdel Wahed told AFP.

She posted on her Twitter account a picture of 30 activists who were arrested in recent days.

A statement by the "New Generation" party stated that "30 armed military vehicles surrounded the movement's headquarters" in Sulaymaniyah prior to the demonstration, and held "the regional authority and the Union and Democratic Parties responsible for preserving the life of the movement's president, deputies and leaders," stressing that "we have informed the embassies and the United Nations of what is happening."

'bad situation'

Human rights activists often denounce arbitrary arrests and violations of the right to demonstrate and freedom of the press in the Kurdistan Region.

The head of the "New Generation" movement, Shaswar Abdul Wahed, wrote in a tweet on the first of August, "The situation in the Kurdistan region is bad. The authorities do not address the problems, but rather increase them. Corruption, poverty and unemployment have reached their peak. The regional government does not listen to the opposition forces." You will not hold new elections. Do we have any other choice but to demonstrate?"

Two rival parties in the Kurdistan region, which present themselves as an oasis of stability in a conflict-ridden country, dominate the political scene: the Kurdistan Democratic Party and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, led by the Barzani and Talabani families.

The suppression of this demonstration comes at a time when supporters of the influential leader Muqtada al-Sadr are holding an open sit-in in the gardens of the Iraqi parliament, after they stormed the fortified Green Zone in central Baghdad.

Well that’s interesting America, I watched all those same tactics being used on citizens during the 2020 election. Must be easier to see when it’s in another country.

So for the score card Bagdad finally gets a good mark, such a long time coming while America and Kurdistan are looking the same using force to maintain an established set of power to a small pet engage of ruling elite.

I still think that the USA has the best republic in the world, we will see what time has to show us.
