SULAIMANI —Member of the Kurdistan Regional Government’s (KRG) negotiating delegation Zagros Fatah said on Thursday (September 17) that Regional officials will visit Baghdad on September 20 to discuss the federal budgeting process.

Fatah told the Kurdistan Democratic Party’s (KDP) official media outlet that the delegation will include representatives of the planning and finance ministries, adding that the focus would be coming up with the Region’s share of the budget.

In the 2019 budget, it was set at 12.67 percent, down from 17 percent in previous budgets.

In April, Baghdad cut off all budget transfers to Erbil in retaliation for its failure to send the federal government any of the oil it was required to under the 2019 federal budget law, causing a severe disruption in the Region’s finances.

Some funding was restored in a deal between the two governments last month, but it is a temporary agreement contingent on Erbil meeting certain conditions.

Fatah added that the delegation hopes to inject some long-term planning into the draft budget, setting out mechanisms that cover the next three years.
