(Baghdad: Al Furat News) Iraq is preparing to export the barley crop, which is surplus to the local market's needs, in a precedent that is the first of its kind and has not happened for decades.

The Minister of Agriculture, Muhammad Karim, revealed, in a press statement, "the mechanisms and details of barley export that Iraqi exporters will exclusively carry out after fulfilling the conditions. The public auction for the quantity of barley will be announced according to the directives of the Council of Ministers for the purpose of exporting to all countries."
And, and that "the bidding will start next week at the ministry’s headquarters for each quantity of 50 thousand tons. As for the countries that have applied to Iraq to import barley, they are: Iran, Saudi Arabia and Qatar."
He pointed out that "the Ministry's stores and silos also received the entire quantity of the wheat crop estimated at more than five million tons, which is a strategic storage for food security for Iraq after achieving self-sufficiency, as the Ministry of Trade grinds it and distributes it within the ration card after Iraq two years ago imported from Abroad more than three million tons of wheat annually.
As for the date crop that has distinguished Iraq for centuries, it has returned to the export front again, as a meeting will be held at the headquarters of the Ministry of Agriculture with exporters to determine the controls that will be implemented and the quantities that will be issued in order for Iraqi dates to reach very high specifications, and according to the Minister of Agriculture Muhammad Karim, Fumigation and examination of dates exported to importing countries, so that prices are balanced with neighboring countries, ”indicating that“ the export of dates for the current agricultural season will begin on 10/1/2020, and then the dates will be fully mature and the timing of their entry is appropriate to the global market for dates. ”

Mubasher: The Iraqi Minister of Agriculture, Muhammad Karim, revealed the mechanisms and details of barley export that Iraqi exporters will exclusively carry out after fulfilling the conditions.

The minister said, according to Al-Sabah newspaper, that the public auction of the quantity of barley will be announced according to the directives of the Council of Ministers for the purpose of exporting to all countries, pointing out that the auction will start next week at the ministry’s headquarters for each quantity of 50 thousand tons.

Karim added that the countries that applied to Iraq to import barley are Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Iran.

Iraq is preparing to export the barley crop, in excess of the local market's need, in a quantity of 700 thousand tons, through public bidding for exporters.

A spokesman for the Ministry of Agriculture, Hamid Al-Nayef, said on July 20 that Iraq had a surplus of 850,000 -900,000 tons of barley from last season, and that the ministry had obtained permission from the Council of Ministers to export this surplus through private sector companies.

On April 22, the Iraqi Council of Ministers approved  the recommendation of the Ministerial Council for the Economy regarding the marketing of the barley crop.

The  former Minister of Agriculture , Saleh al-Hasani, said that the approval of the Council of Ministers comes after achieving self-sufficiency, and allows the Ministry of Agriculture to sell the barley crop for export purposes at the best prices, provided that it is not less than $ 125 per ton.
