Baghdad / news

The US Agency for International Development (USAID) has committed more than $ 10 million to combat the Corona pandemic in Iraq, which allowed the United Nations Development Program to expand its response to the pandemic in three additional governorates.

The agency said in a statement received by "Al-Ikhbaria" that "the funds allocated will be used to finance the activities of the stabilization project for the liberated areas of the United Nations Development Program in cooperation with the Iraqi government in rehabilitating health facilities and providing medical equipment and furniture for hospitals in priority areas that were previously identified. In Basra, Dohuk, Karbala, Kirkuk, Najaf and Nineveh, three additional areas are Babel, Dhi Qar, and Maysan.

"The financing will also be used to rehabilitate the pharmaceutical factory east of Mosul, one of the largest factories in Iraq, as it is an important source of supplying government medical facilities, primary health care centers and pharmacies with the necessary medicines, as it was severely damaged after ISIS took control of the city," she added.

"The very high number of confirmed cases of coronavirus infection during the past few weeks is a cause for great concern and shows that the virus has not yet reached its peak in Iraq," said Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Program in Iraq, Zeina Ali Ahmed.

"This generous contribution from the United States Agency for International Development came just in time, as it will allow us to expand our geographical reach and reach more communities in three additional governorates in need of this support. We are very grateful to USAID - one of the largest donors to the United Nations program Development, for its continued dedication to support the affected communities first and pursued a policy of not abandoning anyone. "

The director of the USAID mission, Dana Mansouri, stressed that: "The United States is proud to support this work to combat the Corona pandemic and to help the Iraqi people; this action will support citizens throughout Iraq to obtain the treatment they need to fight the Corona virus."

USAID joins Belgium, Denmark, Japan, the Netherlands and Sweden as key partners to support the UNDP response in Iraq to the Corona virus pandemic.
