IS Suicide Bombers Attack US Base in Makhmour

ERBIL — A US military base came under attack on Sunday by the Islamic State (IS) suicide bombers in Qaraj district of Makhmour city in southern Erbil.

Jamal Murtka, the commander of the Peshmerga forces in Makhmour, told BasNews that a number of IS suicide bombers conducted attacked a US base at 12am last night in Pungina village in Qaraj district.

He noted that the base opened 10 days ago for coordination between the Iraqi and Peshmerga forces.

He added “the Peshmerga forces are on alert and an investigation into the offensive is under way.”

According to military sources, 3 IS suicide bombers carried out the offensive. However, they were repelled by the US troops at the base. Two of the militants were gunned down and the third detonated his explosives without inflicting the base or the soldiers with any damage.
