Date not set for Kurdish blocs delegation visit to Baghdad

Sunday, June 6th 2010 @ 7:23 PM - AK News

Erbil, June 6 (AKnews) – The Kurdish blocs alliance held a meeting Sunday to discuss the setting of a date for a negotiating delegation which is expected to visit Baghdad for talks over the formation of the new Iraqi government with other Iraqi actors, however, did not reach a conclusion.

Mohammad Hakim, a member of the Kurdistan Islamic Group (IG), part of the meeting, said Sunday that members of the Kurdish alliance did not set a date for expected visit to Baghdad due to the absence of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) members in meeting in Erbil.

The PUK was busy recently with holding its third congress in Sulaimaniyah city.

But the visit is still in place. As soon as the Kurdish delegation holds talks with other Iraqi political blocs about the formation of the new Iraqi government, they will return to Kurdistan Region to announce the final position, according to the official.

“We believe that, postponing our visit to Baghdad would not impact on the Kurdish alliance’s plans," Hakim said, but the sooner the visit the better.

According to him all Iraqi political blocs have agreed on the terms and conditions of the Kurds to take part in the government.

The Kurdish coalition consists of the Kurdistan Alliance list - a coalition of the two major Kurdish parties, the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) led by Iraqi President Jalal Talabani, and the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) led by president of Kurdistan Region Massoud Barzani - in addition to the Change list, and two Islamic parties, the IG and Kurdistan Islamic Union (KIU)
