Excellent feedback and comments. I think you filled in a few of my holes, like praying for others. Quiet correct! :tiphat:

OBTW..I reread what I wrote and I totally screwed the analogy up...should of have been cart before the horse...that's what you get for deep diving on these type of subject when you can't read what you wrote. ha ha

I do want to add to your feedback on blacks and repression...because it does tie into what I was mentioning with "minorities" but I can see that my light dusting on the subject didn't hit the mark, so I promise to expand on those thoughts next week

One minor divergence in our two opinions, you mentioned these countries as non-socialist:. New Zealand, Hong Kong, Japan, Czech Republic, Belgium, France, Russia, Slovenia, Germany, South Korea, UK, Hungary, Bulgaria

I've been to every one of them (lived in Japan, NZ, UK and Germany), and while they may not be AS social as norway, finland, sweden and the neatherland...they are FAR to the left of what America is, so much so that the normal Yank wouldn't really pick up on the difference. I'd even say Canada is probably fairly close as is Australia...hope Fly doesn't kick my butt for saying that. ha ha

Buy the way, I'm SOOOOOO impressed that this crowd is minding their P&Q....it is extremely rare that they would allow the likes of us to keep discussing this, I think you deserve tremendous credit for taking a very level headed, not threating approach.

Kudo Neo...very well done! :bravo:

NEO . . . I can not address your responses from my iPhone & I have a conference at church this weekend plus a family reunion in a nearby city! Just let me say that because HE has revealed himself to me, I know that I know that I know that HE is real! I have been awakened to His love & I am forever changed! HE is beautiful & glorious & mighty!

Once you experience this, you want others to have it too! If that offends you, that was not my intent . . . I want you to know how incredibly awesome HE IS!!! So, let's just leave it at that for now! I am praying for you, although you being an atheist couldn't care less. However, I know that The Lord of Hosts (which God calls Himself more than any other name & it means the mighty man of war) will war against the enemies of your soul! When we ask Him to supernaturally intervene that HE will RISE UP AS THE MIGHTY MAN OF WAR & HE is able to break through even the hardest of hearts! So, you can expect it or not expect it but I am believing that you are getting ready to have an encounter with The Almighty God! So be it!

- I hear you, so then do you think for instance the murders of all those innocent women during the with hunts were justified?

"We are to use this not to live by (NEW TESTAMENT NOW) but to study to not repeat the mistakes constantly repeated by Judah."

-Really? The seven deadly sins are in the first testament, do you not adhere to those? Many christians do. Even within the new test jesus condones slavery and in fact has specific instructions regarding the handling and payment of slaves. Do you then condone slavery yourself? I'm guessing not.

"The good thing about God is that he offers forgiveness."

- Except after you die right? The forgiveness option apparently has an expiration date huh? One can apparently be a terrible person their entire life, then on their death bed simply get forgiven and all is well. Meanwhile one could be a great person and not except jesus and not receive the option of forgiveness after death. Doesn't make sense that god would punish good people and bless horrible people who simply say "forgive me" at the last minute. Just seems pretty immoral imo.
Witch hunt murders were carried out man not God.

Seven deadly sins were put together by Catholic Church. Is the Catholic Church the Church that follows the principals set forth by Christ

Who is the judge of what makes a great person? You cannot I cannot know what is in there heart. A person on their death bed that obeys the Gospel are they truly saved? Again what is in their heart. Did they truly believe? Anybody can go through the motions, becoming a Child of God begins with Hearing the Word of God, Believe, Repent, confess, and be baptized. If you skip the first three are you saved?

Did Jesus Condone slavery? Depends on the kind slave. Slave to sin yes he condemned. Slave has more than one reference in the Bible. We cannot be for certain if it one who is voluntarily working or involuntarily working. If human slavery was present and history shows that more than likely it was it was written for both. 1Tim was written to those "under yoke" which implies labor or servitude. Those under "yoke" were respect their "masters". Christ did not cancel these obligations but seeked to strengthen them. Basic rules of labor. We are all slaves at some point in our lives. If you are in debt you are a slave to the lender. Unless your self employed you are a servant to your boss. If you sign a contract you have obligations to uphold.

Did Christ Condone mistreatment of people for profit?

The answers to all of your questions about god are very simple to find.

Read the Bible

Quit relying on other sources for information on what the Bible says or means

How can you decide whose is right in a debate if you don't about the subject.

How do you know who is telling you the truth the world is full of spin.

You cannot let any one tell you what the bible means with out getting their opinion

If you really want to know the what, when, where and why you must read the Bible yourself.

My wife came to me about a year ago she had been watching a film about the banned books of the bible.

She didn't think it was right someone had banned books from the bible.

I tried to explain why those books to no do not belong in the Bible with no success.

She had never read the Bible despite being saved and a christian.

All she has been relying on was preachers and study groups so she was not getting the whole story.

Just bits and pieces and with others opinions as to what it means.

So finally I told her until she read the Bible and she read the banned books she would not ever understand why they were banned. She has since started reading the Bible and now we can have conversations about the word of god instead of what she heard from this or that.

If you really want the truth then read the Bible yourself.

If you don't read the Bible and relying on what you watch and hear for information on God.

You are basing the most important decision in your life on inaccurate information and bias

And if you are not willing to read the Bible then you do not have the right to form any opinion

about God.

"OBTW..I reread what I wrote and I totally screwed the analogy up...should of have been cart before the horse...that's what you get for deep diving on these type of subject when you can't read what you wrote. ha ha"

- No worries, i understood what you meant

"I've been to every one of them (lived in Japan, NZ, UK and Germany), and while they may not be AS social as norway, finland, sweden and the neatherland...they are FAR to the left of what America is, so much so that the normal Yank wouldn't really pick up on the difference."

- Agreed, and as I think you agree, there are degrees of socialism, simply having some social safeguards or having left leaning ideologies doesn't really equate to pure socialism. Even America has some social safeguards.

"Buy the way, I'm SOOOOOO impressed that this crowd is minding their P&Q....it is extremely rare that they would allow the likes of us to keep discussing this, I think you deserve tremendous credit for taking a very level headed, not threating approach. "

- Wait why would they not allow us to discuss this? I mean I understand that believers are the majority here but this isn't a christian forum? We haven't broken forum rules, and we aren't disrespecting anyone. I guess I don't understand what the issue would be, but thanks Black Swan, I too enjoy these conversations and look forward to more. Take care

"Just let me say that because HE has revealed himself to me, I know that I know that I know that HE is real! I have been awakened to His love & I am forever changed! HE is beautiful & glorious & mighty!"

- Fair enough and thats your belief, But that doesn't make the claim true. For instance "he" hasn't revealed anything to any of the billions of non christians. Seems mighty strange that such a powerful boundless god who is literally hell bent on having us believe in him would have such a difficult time revealing himself to the majority of the world. Doesn't add up. Just sayin

"Witch hunt murders were carried out man not God."

- Yeah, on god's "orders" Of course god never actually in reality ever carries anything out, he would first have to exist for him to personally do that.

"Seven deadly sins were put together by Catholic Church. Is the Catholic Church the Church that follows the principals set forth by Christ"

- Well aside from the child abuse, yes. All christians follow the teachings of christ, that's the basis for being a christian.

"Who is the judge of what makes a great person? You cannot I cannot know what is in there heart"

- Well perhaps you can't but I certainly can. It's pretty obvious to me that hitler wasn't a great person. Maybe you need someone to explain that to you, but thankfully the majority can decipher this on their own.

"Anybody can go through the motions, becoming a Child of God begins with Hearing the Word of God, Believe, Repent, confess, and be baptized. If you skip the first three are you saved?"

- Ok and how can a sociopath not accomplish any of these "redemption prerequisites"??

"If human slavery was present and history shows that more than likely it was it was written for both."

- Of course human slavery was present, it still is today.

"1Tim was written to those "under yoke" which implies labor or servitude. Those under "yoke" were respect their "masters". Christ did not cancel these obligations but seeked to strengthen them. Basic rules of labor."

-Hmm, so American slavery and the absolute torture of the african slaves, jews, and the poor young girls sold into global sex slavery, etc. These absolutely monstrous atrocities were/are simply "Basic rules of labor"? Wow, O.K. then. Statements like this make it a no brainer as to why some actually need their morals written down for them. Just sayin

"If you are in debt you are a slave to the lender. Unless your self employed you are a servant to your boss. If you sign a contract you have obligations to uphold."

- I have to disagree my friend, you are party to a contract not a slave. You made a conscious choice to enter an obligatory agreement Slaves don't have options. It's either obey or be beaten or killed. Your analogy is way off my friend. For instance, did the American slaves enter a "contract" to labor themselves to death and be tortured? I think not.

"Did Christ Condone mistreatment of people for profit?"

- Absolutely, what do you think the basis of slavery is??? Profit of course. What was the point of american slavery? To support the American and in particular the souther economy, why do you think there was a civil war?? To keep slavery for monetary profit going. They wanted to keep implementing the as you said, "basic rules of labor", labor for what? For profit, what else?

Ok, so in other words, the bible is true because it's the word of god, and the word of god is true because it's in the bible. Harry potter is true because it's the word of harry potter and the word of harry potter must be true because it's in harry potter. See how that doesn't logically add up my friend?

NO Christ did not condone the mistreatment of people.... The above examples of mistreatment are exactly what were not condoned.. No were can you find Beat your slave as yourself. Check the Greek for the word original text was doolos which means servant---voluntarily or involuntarily. Col 4 tells masters to treat servants fairly not to beat them but to treat them equal and just. This is not mistreatment.

Witch trials and murderer were carried out by man under under mans terms. By people who "claimed" to be doing it the name of religion. You cannot blame God for these senseless acts. Is it your fault that I hit the wall in your name NO. God did not order these trials. What was the dates of these trials???

Really you know what is in my heart? Can you look inside and see my deepest emotions?? Your definition of a great person may not be the same as mine.

So Baptists believe the same as Catholics, Methodists believe the same as Nazarene?? No they dont. Seven deadly sins were originated by the Catholic Church. Is the Catholic Church the same Church that is found in Acts???

Question for Neo. I can understand your point of view regarding the Bible and christianity and I respect that. I ask you this. Can you point to a place in the Bible where there are/is scientific contradictions or inaccuracies or false statements? I have studied the King James Bible extensively, and I cannot find any scientific contradictions.

"NO Christ did not condone the mistreatment of people.... The above examples of mistreatment are exactly what were not condoned."

- I disagree, and the parables I presented were most definitely condoned by jesus.

"No were can you find Beat your slave as yourself.

- Luke 12:47-48 NLT, "The servant will be severely punished, for though he knew his duty, he refused to do it" What do you think severe punishment meant to barbaric bronze aged people, time out?

"Col 4 tells masters to treat servants fairly not to beat them but to treat them equal and just. This is not mistreatment."

Ok, well obviously Luke 12:47-48 NLT, says different so pick your poison.

"Witch trials and murderer were carried out by man under under mans terms. By people who "claimed" to be doing it the name of religion. You cannot blame God for these senseless acts."

Really? Exodus 22:17 NAB, "You should not let a sorceress live." God seems pretty clear here.

"Is it your fault that I hit the wall in your name NO."

- I disagree, if I tell you to, and if you believe that you have to do what I tell you as you believe you have to obey god then yes, a strong case could be made that it is my fault. As you are blindly following my irrational bidding.

"God did not order these trials. What was the dates of these trials???"

- Witch hunts existed long before the bible was created and continued long after. The prominent period that most are familiar with spanned from the late 1400's to the late 1700's which included the Salem which trials that were carried out by christian puritan colonialists in the name of god which was supported by such passages as Luke 12:47-48 NLT.

"Really you know what is in my heart? Can you look inside and see my deepest emotions??"

- No, not without a frame of reference. On the other hand and to reiterate my point and hitler example, if you happened to murder a million people I think I'd be able to figure out what's in your heart or at the very least make the determination that you are not a great person. That'd be pretty obvious. Let me ask you this, is there any crime to which a believer cannot be redeemed for?

"So Baptists believe the same as Catholics, Methodists believe the same as Nazarene?? No they don't."

- Well aside from the subtle differences ALL christians are followers of christ, I realize that different sects have different rules, which btw is also evidence of the bibles fallacies and misinterpretations, but my point was that regardless of sect, they all follow christ. You would be hard pressed to find a christian that does not accept jesus. Apparently according to you, jesus' and god's word differs depending on which type of christian one is. Further evidence that the "word" was simply man made which would explain all the different interpretations.

Let me know if you have anymore questions my friend. Take care

Parable in Luke is a parable a story used to teach a lesson. Meaning of this parable is a Christian know Gods will. If they fail to do Gods will we will be punished.

Exodus 22:7 Old Testament Christians live by teachings in New Testament

Yes. Committing of a Crime and not confessing and repenting of it will lead to eternal punishment.

Differences in different denominations is mans fault not Gods. Man over the years has warped Gods word to justify things that it does not, they have misinterpreted to promote lifestyles, push their on agenda ad etc This warping had led to many different interpretations of the Bible. Sadly 99.9999% are wrong in their teachings. Many people claim to be Christians claim to know Jesus at the same time promote and practice things that are not with Gods word. Many of the false teachings have given Christianity a bad wrap, these differences have led to many people turning their back. There is only one TRUE CHURCH. Study the teaching by Paul, his letters, teaching of Peter, John and you find the Church Christ died for. Neo, you have been blessed with a very sharp mind and it is apparent you have vast knowledge of the Bible and appreciate you not getting defensive and keeping this peaceful

I think the problem is interpitation and perspective, everyone has a unique point of view and so everyone's perceptions or what God is or isn't are different even for people who have read the same books or stories

and even for people who have profess that they don't believe in god, somewhere in the back of their mind there is an inkling of the thought that there is "something" it may not be what everyone is writing about but there is something out there

and on those peoples death beds they grasp for that something to help them pass thru to whatever awaits us.

I have long ago stopped stressing over who or what there is out there and just tried to live the best life I can live with the cards I've been dealt, trying not to judge others or force them to my way or anyone else's way of thinking or believing

so in conclusion to me 2 cents worth of nothing, I think everyone should just live & let live

Actually, these examples are occurances. I was talking about direct measurable scientific contradictions that would prove the bible is not true within the bible.

So, in that line of reasoning if your science cannot explain it then it didn't happen or doesn't exist or isn't true? That doesn't hold water. Have you ever seen a proton? Does that mean it doesn't exist? Ever seen a Graviton? Can science prove a Graviton's existence? Just because I don't believe in a Graviton or whatever does not mean that it doesn't exist.

NEO . . . you are cracking me up! Are you professor???? The Bible says that the light appears to ALL men so everyone gets a chance . . . Your time is coming! If you are going to think for me, I can promise you that you will have your hands full!!! I can tell that you are very intelligent but who do you think gave you that brilliant mind??? Also, God says that HE uses the simple things to confound the wise!!! So, I guess we are there!!! No offense!

- Absolutely true my friend, The fact that there's any type of existence simply blows my mind, and I often contemplate if there is a purpose of the existence of anything. The fact that we are made up of the same elements of stars is NUTS! We are truly cosmically related to the universe. Lol! I sometimes think that we are part of another working organism, like perhaps the earth and everything on it are elements of a cell, and the galaxy is that cell, working with trillions of other galaxies/cells that make up another organism, and that organism and it's environment are but another cellular element within another cell in yet another organism and so on. Trips me out.

"I have long ago stopped stressing over who or what there is out there and just tried to live the best life I can live with the cards I've been dealt, trying not to judge others or force them to my way or anyone else's way of thinking or believing"

- So then are you an atheist??

"so in conclusion to me 2 cents worth of nothing, I think everyone should just live & let live"

- You said it all man. Good post!

"I was talking about direct measurable scientific contradictions that would prove the bible is not true within the bible"

To name a few…

Carbon dating - contradicts the young earth theory

Fossil Record - contradicts young earth theory

Evolution - contradicts adam and eve

archaeoloy - contradicts noahs ark

Zoology - contradicts noahs ark

Any physical evidence found for jesus is inconclusive

"So, in that line of reasoning if your science cannot explain it then it didn't happen or doesn't exist or isn't true? That doesn't hold water"

- I agree with you it doesn't hold water but that's not my line of reasoning nor is it science's. Science doesn't state that if something cannot be explained it can not be true. For instance dark matter isn't explained, yet we know it exists because there is evidence for it. If there is no credible evidence for something than there is no reason/need to believe that something.

"Have you ever seen a proton? Does that mean it doesn't exist? Ever seen a Graviton? Can science prove a Graviton's existence? "

- No I haven't, but protons can be detected through spectroscopy, gravitons are hypothetical. Evidence isn't restricted to simply what can be seen with the eye, there are many more ways of credibly determining that things exist. For instance radio waves can't be seen with the eye, but much like protons we have other methods to detect them.

"Just because I don't believe in a Graviton or whatever does not mean that it doesn't exist."

- I hear that and I agree, and if I am understanding you right, what I believe your overall point is, is that because I did not personally witness the supernatural events that supposedly took place in biblical times, I can't claim they didn't happen. I agree with this, and to restate my position, I can't claim god and the bible aren't real and true. However without proper evidence and considering the strong counter evidence such as I mentioned above I can't just blindly believe in them either. For instance, you can't prove that allah or ganesha are not real, yet you don't accept the claims of evidence from muslims and hindus, and their claims are no less circumstantial and inconclusive than the christian claims of evidence.

- You're an atheist in regards to all the other countless known gods in this world, so what do you make of the fact that peoples beliefs are closely related to their surrounding environments? Do you think that perhaps you've just won the jackpot and happened to be born in a christian influenced environment?
NEO . . . you are cracking me up! No offense!
"NEO . . . you are cracking me up! Are you professor???? "

- Lol! professor? Oh my no, you give me too much credit my friend.

"The Bible says that the light appears to ALL men so everyone gets a chance . . . Your time is coming!"

- Possibly, hasn't happened yet but who knows, the sky could part.

"If you are going to think for me, I can promise you that you will have your hands full!!!"

- I'll take your word for it, but likewise if you're going to pray for me you might have your hands full as well, Gotta lot of people here praying for me already so you've got some heavy competition lol!

"I can tell that you are very intelligent but who do you think gave you that brilliant mind???"

- My momma of course, who else?

"Also, God says that HE uses the simple things to confound the wise!!! So, I guess we are there!!! No offense! "

- Non taken, take care

Actually, these examples are occurances. I was talking about direct measurable scientific contradictions that would prove the bible is not true within the bible.

So, in that line of reasoning if your science cannot explain it then it didn't happen or doesn't exist or isn't true? That doesn't hold water. Have you ever seen a proton? Does that mean it doesn't exist? Ever seen a Graviton? Can science prove a Graviton's existence? Just because I don't believe in a Graviton or whatever does not mean that it doesn't exist.

God speed

Neo...I again admire that you entertain questions such as these. As you can see Colt isn't REALY interest in the truth, he wants to put his (or her) own spin on things. The original question of what scientific evidence contradicts are there in the bible can be quickly researched and mined on google in about 30 seconds. And yet, here he goes with this??

Why you don't turn the tables on him and ask, why is it that we have found MILLIONS of fossils of animals that aren't walking around today, and according to the bible, the earth is only 6000 years old...why isn't there say any T Rexs in your neighborhood? Why didn't Noah mention putting a raptor on the ark...now that would have been a story to tell around the campfire for a few hundred years...can you imagine, getting raptors together with panda bears...oh that's right, he put them all to sleep didn't he.

There is, I think, somewhat of a natural progression of the believer that becomes an unbeliever. At first, we look around the world and we take notice that things aren’t the way they are described in the good books. At the age of about 8, I remember, thinking, now wait a minute, I've been to the zoo a million times and I have YET to see a talking snake. And why isn't any miracles going on now a days...like amputees growing new arms and legs..and you know that bread that is turned into Christ's body...well, it still pretty much looks like bread..and why in the WORLD I'd want to eat a person's body and drink their blood. ewwww...that's GROSS! :o Honestly, if you got off a cruise ship, and walked down to the native villiage and saw someone drinking a bowl of human blood..won't you be a bit worried about these folks. Well, we have the same worries about you guys now...really.

After that, you start diving into the history of belief, and realize that the words weren't written down for generation after the event. None of the so called apostle books were written by anyone at the time they supposedly were alive. I think most were written down more than 60 years later. Then, like any good scientist, you think, hmmmm...I wonder what other (non corrupted, I mean non christian) historians at the time wrote about this guy Jesus..and you soon discover not one historian at the time or within several generations after the events wrote about JC. And...get this, if you study Egyptian history, Moses isn't mentioned at ALL. Yup, this guy supposedly took all the slaves out of Egypt and not one Egyptian historian mention him in their history

After that, you can get into the philosophy such as this post. And about the same time, you also look around and find out that there are thousands of religions out there or that came before and just like everything else in evolution, they die off in time.

What you are finally left with, is studying WHY people believe. You've hit on many several times, such as a way to keep people in control (the Dark Ages is a perfect example), which is one of the biggies. And of course, a method to explain why things are as they are is probably on the top 10 list. But as science continues to explain away the mysteries, the believer is left with the God of the Gaps. I think when science got around to explaining lightening, Zeus was pretty p o ed. Ha ha

But in the end, at least for me, it makes me sad for the believer. They've been sold a bill of goods without them realizing it. They are completely brainwashed by their families, friends and society at large. And if you try to enlighten them, they get mad at you, oh first they feel sorry for you, then they think you are ignorant, then they think you are evil, it's a natural progression. :(

"and even for people who have profess that they don't believe in god, somewhere in the back of their mind there is an inkling of the thought that there is "something" it may not be what everyone is writing about but there is something out there and on those peoples death beds they grasp for that something to help them pass thru to whatever awaits us."

Good post!

I have thought about that idea about being a part of a larger organism but it just seems like Sci-fi now

and to answer your question, no I'm not an Atheist, even though I am an engineer and I tend to over analyze everything, I choose to believe in a higher power (maybe not the same version that's touted about on these forums) but really at the core isn't it all the same being, entity, god

so yes I believe in god

but my image of him is a cyberpunk, crazed mad scientist with a crazed look in his eye who rewards ingenuity, and creativity (you all might not like my image of the supreme being), but that's ok cause I prob don't like some of you all's image of god either. : )

Peace

The last part is kind of an exaggeration of what I believe, so maybe a little Sci-Fi

to tell you the truth I do believe in a personal god that I am connected to, this belief is not based on any Facts or proof or anything logical but is based on an personal belief alone and that after all is the definition of Faith

whether or not there is anything waiting for me after I die (and that is what everyone is wondering) doesn't matter here and now, what does is what I believe or should i say choose to believe and how that belief causes me to act and treat the others around me that I have to share this world with.

Yeah, I would have to agree with you, I can't really explain how the contradictions between science and the bible are not blatantly obvious. I think it's as you said, some just aren't interested in the truth, they simply can not step outside the box, get away from their comfort zone and simply use rational thinking. It's classic cult behavior.

I don't know how believers can deny the true age of the dinosaurs? I mean dino and man together? I don't understand this belief at all. Even some the non young earth christians have finally decided to admit it's silly to deny this one. And the idea of noah's ark is just laughably absurd. It contradicts so many natural laws, you simply have to believe it happened magically hence magical thinking. Here is a great very short rundown of how nonsense the story of the ark is

Yeah, it's never seems odd to some that all these miraculous things only happened during the time all the miraculous things were written about. Or that god watched for hundreds of thousands of years as human beings suffered through agony and finally decided to make his presence known and intervene just a few thousand years ago, and not to the most civilized intelligent cultures of the time such as the chinese, no, to a bunch of illiterate bronze aged shepherds. Just doesn't add up.

Agreed about the apostles, total speculation. Just the fact that there are countless savior stories that nearly perfectly mirror the events of jesus prior to the story of jesus ever being committed to paper just strengthens the idea that jesus was just a retold story with a few added differences.

Yeah, agreed, it's a natural progression. The more we learn the more we can let go of myths. In this sense knowledge truly is powerful and freeing. The internet has been a huge part of the current rise in atheism. Once sheltered religious children can now simply google the facts, and at least have the chance to make an educated decision. I can only imagine the type of filters religious parents must put on their children's computers. Lol! That is if they even allow them to surf the web at all. I personally know some religious parents who don't let their kids anywhere near the internet if they can help it.

"I think when science got around to explaining lightening, Zeus was pretty p o ed. Ha ha "

- Lol! Right, and poseidon probably wasn't any happier once we learned how the tides worked. Apparently Bill O'rielly never learned that one though.

"But in the end, at least for me, it makes me sad for the believer. They've been sold a bill of goods without them realizing it."

I agree, to quote Jim Jeffries, " I don't hate the religious just like I don't hate the mentally insane". Yeah it's sad that credulity can be so powerful, but that is the nature of the beast just look at any cult. The indoctrination is so potent that believers are proud to be slaves to a completely immoral entity. It's the same as the "house slave" condition. And yeah, Iv'e noticed the progression of anger, pity, concern etc. I think what happens is when a believer suddenly takes in too much rational information they tend to get flustered and simply revert back to their comfort zone. Good talks Black Swan, I much enjoy your perspective, I wonder how many other non believers are here?

I got a random question to ask you. i don't know how invested you are with the dinar or if you think this thing is actually going to pop. I personally have many doubts at this point, and i'm more on the pessimistic lop side, but do you ever get the feeling that since this place is flooded with believers, and hence in our opinions credulous people, that perhaps this investment isn't sound? I don't adhere to this idea, however the thought has crossed my mind, was wondering if it ever crossed yours?

My dear, many of the answers you failed to find as child are in the Bible. The discrepancies you uses as talking points against religion may seem logical but are simply in error. For example, Communion we are partaking of emblems of Christ, not his actual body but emblems to remind us of him and his sacrifice. Sorry Egyptian history does coincide with the chronological events of the Bible. There is also as much if not more scientific data to validate the Bible. As far as God of the Gaps has science closed any of these Gaps?? Please don't be sad for me I have chosen to follow the Bible by my own choosing. No I don't think you are ignorant or evil. In fact your very smart and sassy!! I only hope and pray you will look on both sides of this topic with an open heart and open mind. wink.gif

Pumpkin, I appreciate your kind words as well as your nurturing gestures...even if I still remember how you lead me down the rosy path sometime ago. :P

I think you would find many people, especially in the Catholic faith, that do faithfully receive communion, actually believe the bread and wine to be turned into Christ body. At least my grand dad does, who is an extremely devoted Irish Catholic.

Has Science closed any of the Gaps? Sweetie, I'll start off with these: the flat earth, the geocentric universe, the existence of ether, the cosmological constant, cold fusion....shall I go on? :D These were all very popular beliefs in their day.

Like I posted before: One of my favorite examples of confirmation bias comes from the wonderfully evidence –of early anatomy and physiology. Up until 1543, the traditional Judeo-Christian belief that woman had one more rib than men. (Adam having furnished one for the making of Eve). This belief survived until a Flemish anatomist Andreas Vesalius finally showed otherwise-by, you know, counting. Reminds me of that country song, "Now why didn't I think of that?"

Bald, may I ask a very simple question: Why don't you still believe in Santa Claus anymore?

I assume you once did. I bet all your friends believed in him too. Your parents told you the stories and you certainly believe they told you the truth, eh? Everywhere you went and everything during the Xmas season shouted out that Santa lived and would bring all nice little boys and girls their hearts content. And being that you no doubt were the best of the best, I bet you got lots of goodies! :P

So how did you learn the truth? Did you stumble on some evidence that seemed to be counter to what you were told? (I remember turning over my Barbie and seeing “made in Japan” on it and I thought what the heck?) Or did you finally grow out of it and think: talking snakes, I mean flying raindeer, that’s Preposterous!

Or, and I hope this wasn't the case, someone you loved, had to crush your dream and tell you? If so, I bet it hurt like hell, and you were in disbelief that all of it was a lie..it was built on love, happiness and joy...but it was all make believe. :o

Well, unfortunately, I guess I have to play that role in your grown up life as well. Sorry babe. But that is why, I'm sad for you, because some people just don't pick up on the volumes of evidence stacked against religion (please don’t think I'm picking just on Christians).

Do I expect you to take my word? Of course not. You are no doubt so emotional invested in your beliefs that you are unwilling to recognize them as anything but the inviolable truths. And hey...that's your decision...if naive realism is your thing, so be it. At least you’re not telling me that I'm evil and that I'm dammed to Hell, like someone did on one of the other threads.

So, in the end, I simply hope we can continue to co-exist. :)

Signed,

Sassy Tiff

Well since you appear to be asking all the questions, let me ask you one Neo, wouldn't you say that your Atheist view of life means that you have no fear or expectation of anything happening after you die, so what is keeping you from doing anything you want in this life without any though of repercussions,? I mean as an Atheist you must live only in the here & now without any fear or thought of any consequences for your action as long as you get something out of it

under your view there is no meaning to life, it is just a procession to a point of extinction where none of any of our acts have any meaning or relevance, that sounds like a very shallow way to live.

yes I do choose to live by the values my mother taught me, and yes she did get those lessons from a book that's purpose is to teach good morals, even though the only one that has really stuck with me has been the golden rule (I am not a practicing Catholic, christian or anything else) but I do consider myself spiritual, I consider organized religion to be a crutch that allot of people need to lean on to get thru their lives, so in that sense I agree with allot of what you have to say

but the one thing that rings true to me for whatever reason, is that there is a God or entity that I believe might be a culmination of all life and more important, sentient, self aware life.

Tony
