Great post. To play devil's advocate - I would like to see a clear argument concerning Iraq continuing the use of the dollar. Exactly what foreign sales, contractor deals, or international tarriff, foreign exchanges of any kind could they NOT do with the US dollar. Could they keep going on forever with the dollar, as some countries have done, and are we deluding ourselves that they MUST use the IQD?

I hear ya. We have heard lots of garbage out of Iraq. As for the dollar. No way. They could, but they desire to be totally autonomous. So they want their own currency. I think in the heart of hearts they know the dollar is failing. Well, Shabibi does. Plus they probably don't like it that the Dinar they use now is printed by the US. They are prideful people but arrogance and love of power gets in the way in their political and economic process. The best thing that could have happened was the meeting in Erbil of the crucial 5. They are learning democracy but it's coming hard. Finally there are moving forward and now have stood up to the procrastinator. So, time will tell how well they perform.

I think that Iraq is desperately trying to put their big girl panties on. They don't want to keep relying on the dollar. Something has to give - hopefully sooner rather than later!
