  11. Here's the body of the article: Iraqi parliament's Sunni bloc ends walkout Sign up for email newsletters now! Never miss a McClatchy story Register Log in Follow us on Twitter Follow us on Facebook Add us to your iPhone or G1 By Sahar Issa | McClatchy Newspapers BAGHDAD — Iraq averted a new political crisis Saturday when the head of the main Sunni-backed bloc ended a walkout and returned to parliament, paving the way for the formation of a new government. Ayad Allawi, the head of the secular Iraqiya bloc, had walked out of the first session Thursday along with dozens of party members to protest what they said was the breach of an agreement to lift a ban on three of their members accused of ties to former dictator Saddam Hussein's Baath party. "Iraqiya will take an active role in a government that will work towards real national participation within the agreements that we reached with the other political blocs," Haider al Mullah, a spokesman for Iraqiya, told reporters at parliament. Mullah said the walkout on Thursday was due to a "misunderstanding." The two-hour session Saturday ended with agreements aimed at modifying the authorities of the prime minister and cabinet to add a balancing role for a new national security council that Allawi would head. The council is meant as a check on Prime Minister Nouri al Maliki's powers. Maliki now has until late December to choose a cabinet — a process expected to be almost as difficult as agreeing on the prime minister's post. The cabinet ministers will be drawn from all of the major political blocs that supported him. Allawi and his supporters argue that they should have head the government, since the bloc won two more seats than Maliki's alliance. The failure to agree on who would head a government led to an eight-month deadlock after Iraqis went to the polls in early March. Allawi's walkout threatened to jettison the carefully-formed coalition that has returned Maliki to power after securing the support of main Shiite blocs, including the party of cleric Muqtada al Sadr, and the Kurds. Iraqiya agreed in talks over the last week with Maliki and Kurdish leaders to join the coalition government if a series of conditions are met. They include a pledge to overhaul the commission that had banned three prominent Sunni members of parliament from taking their seats. 12. It's most certainly a time for rebuilding of the entire nation: from the most basic of needs (water, electric, food, communications, housing) to the mending of the spirits of the people. So much destruction needs to be reversed. There's a long road ahead. Glad to see word of their commitment to moving forward.
  13. Wow! What an accomplishment to be proud of, even as it's still in progress. Best wishes in your endeavors to bring renewed hope & internal strength to those with disabilities and increased awareness and compassion by society as a whole.
  14. Thanks for the post. Glad to see news of continuing progress with todays meetings.
  15. If they can just keep on a forward momentum, all will be good for the country, it's people and the investment of outsiders. Thanks for posting the article.
  16. What will be thought up next? I'm sure our broadest imaginations wouldn't even touch the surface of what's already out there. So sad.
  17. Smoke & mirrors! Or old news feed based on speculation. Iraq's gov't is already in the process of formation. If Allawi's comments were true, as posted above, he would only be shooting himself (and his bloc) in the foot. The gov't will continue to move forward without him/them, if they choose to not participate. I don't believe he's going to let that happen. Stay calm, everyone!
  18. Thanks to those who were responsible for putting this call together and opening it up to the DV members. This was my first opportunity to listen to a call, and I truly enjoyed it. Putting a voice to a "name" makes participation on the site seem more personal, and the opinions that were shared were very informative and reassuring. Adam, thank you for creating a wonderful site where those of us with a common interest can gather, get educated & share our opinions. Today's call was a natural extension of Adam's promotion for all of us to share confirmed facts, express our opinions and hopefully, get answers to issues we may not fully understand. The whole proclaimed purpose behind Dinar Vets is a location where people may get together to share in the above items. In addition, for those who join VIP, you will have the opportunity to review & take advantage of post RV opportunities that Adam is developing, if we so wish. Many good people have stepped up to the plate in the past several weeks to hold this group together, while Adam's been developing further opportunities, and they've aggressively kept it moving forward in a positive way that can only benefit Adam and Dinar Vets. If we, as a group of members, are not "allowed" to converse with each other in a method that supports Freedom of Speech ... this will totally undermine the support that the membership has for Dinar Vets ... and I'm sure Adam is fully aware of this. The idea that any one of the people who held, participated in or listened to today's call being banned from the site is ridiculous and would only be 100% detrimental to the relationship members share with Adam and the business future of Dinar Vets. We fully believe that members will be RUNNING AWAY from this site if SteveI, zzzzzzzzz or anyone else would be banned/moderated/disciplined in any way for expressing known facts &/or their educated opinions. Who would want to be associated with a site that's operated in such a fashion? In our humble opinions, Bob and Karen.
  19. Glad to hear their explanation on this. It seems as if they're willing to move forward with the on-going political process versus creating opposition. Good news. Thanks for posting.
  20. Anyone have an idea what time (Baghdad time) meetings will reconvene on Friday?
  21. Your topic title is right on the money. We stayed up all night & watched the live stream until it was over ... pretty exciting to witness such a monumental moment in history as it developed before our eyes. Can't wait to catch the next session!
  22. I've seen, in a few DV site postings, that meetings will actually resume on Friday (even though it's their holy day) and also on Saturday. Does anyone have info when the Friday meetings will begin? Pls advise. Many thanks.
