  1. CLAWSON (WWJ) - Responding to a 911 call for a possible domestic violence situation, police arrived at a Maple Road apartment complex to discover that what neighbors described as sounding like a "violent altercation," was in fact, a very loud plea from a woman to her boyfriend to stop passing gas. According to Clawson Police Chief Harry Anderson: "One of the neighbors had heard somebody yelling - a female yelling....she was possibly being hit - yelling, 'Stop! No!'" The neighbor apparently also heard a "repeated loud noise" in between the shouting. When officers arrived on the scene, Anderson said "The female that was inside stated that her boyfriend had continued to pass gas, and she was yelling at him to stop." Nobody was charged in the case although this is a very sobering reminder of the daily dangers our men and women in blue face every day.

  3. How to Make a Mummy — Demonstrated by The Getty Museumin History | June 21st, 2013 Leave a Comment From the day we first learn of them, ancient Egyptian mummies fascinate us. Granted, that day usually comes in elementary school, and soon after it we become aware of the mummy as a prominent presence in various horror movies. But the elaborate, ritualistic process of mummification, and what it says about ancient Egyptian society, continues to intrigue, even though we might no longer want a mummy of our own to prop up in our room like we did at age seven. As it happens, though, the Getty Villa in Malibu has a mummy of their own: a fellow by the name of Herakleides, mummified around 150 A.D., who “combines the millennia-old Egyptian tradition of mummification of the dead with the Roman tradition of individualized portraiture.” In the three-minute Getty-produced video at the top of the post, you can see a reconstruction of Herakleides’ mummification process, from internal organ removal (a particularly interesting phase back in first grade, as I recall) to de-moisturizing with salt, to the application of oils and resins, to the characteristic wrapping with layer upon layer of linen strips. Though this gives you an accurate overview of how the ancient Egyptians preserved their dead, much more remains to be said about mummies in general and this mummy in particular. If you now feel that same desire for further detail that you felt in the classroom those decades ago, see also the lecture just above, “Getting to Know Herakleides: Exploring a Red-Shroud Mummy from Roman Egypt,” from the Getty Museum’s associate conservator of antiquities Marie Svoboda.
  4. The Pentagon has successfully destroyed a replica of an underground nuclear facility using advanced bunker-buster bombs, military officials said Friday. The underground bombing was part of a series of military field exercises, and U.S. officials said it went better than expected, Ynet News reported. U.S. officials spread the good news among friendly nations, Ynet reported, as a means of reassuring them about America’s ability to take out Iran’s nuclear technology, if needed. The experiment used bunker-buster bombs that were developed in July 2012 by Defense Department experts, Ynet reported. The test involved dropping a GBU-57B bomb from a B-2 bomber to see if it could penetrate the concrete ceilings of the underground site. The cost to manufacture each bomb is about $3.5 million. The cost of the new weapon technology — which is six times larger than any other existing bunker buster — was $500 million, Ynet reported. It weighs 13 tons and is twice as fast as the speed of sound, Ynet reported Read more: http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2013/jun/7/new-us-bunker-bombs-take-out-replica-underground-n/#ixzz2VhUvu4jh Follow us: @washtimes on Twitter

Wayne began his career as a sports handicapper, and has gone on to host and appear on many of the biggest television and radio news networks including: FOX News Channel, FOX Business Network, CNBC, and radio shows like Glenn Beck, Michael Savage, Jerry Doyle and Mancow Muller. He is a former Libertarian vice presidential nominee. Wayne's latest book is out on April 15, 2013: "The Ultimate Obama Survival Guide: Secrets to Protecting Your Family, Your Finances, and Your Freedom." Wayne Allyn Root is the author of ”The Ultimate Obama Survival Guide,” available now. My life has crossed paths with President Obama on multiple occasions. According to Obama, we were Columbia University classmates, both Pre Law and Political Science majors in the Class of ’83. I also ran against Obama in 2008 on the Libertarian Party Presidential ticket. What are the odds? But something about “the Obama at Columbia story” has always bothered me. Earlier in the week right here at The Blaze I wrote about having just returned from New York, where I attended my 30th Columbia University reunion. I celebrated with my esteemed classmates. Everyone except Barack Obama. As usual- he wasn’t there. Not a trace. Not a video greeting. Not a letter. I could not find any classmates who knew him. I called Obama “the Ghost of Columbia University.” I pointed out (as I’ve said in the media for many years now) that Obama may have been registered at Columbia, may have graduated from Columbia, but he was rarely (if ever) seen for the two years in-between. It’s a strange, mysterious and frightening story. Is he the real-life “Manchurian Candidate?” What explains Obama having just enough skeletal proof that he was there (one photo, one roommate, one professor, one friend)…but never seen in a class, never on anyone’s radar screen, almost invisible. A total 2-year blackout. It’s like a story straight out of a novel about the CIA or KGB. He graduated Columbia, but it’s almost as if he never went there. To make matters more mysterious, Obama’s college records are sealed. He’s had plenty of opportunities to authorize the release, to clear the air. He has never chosen to do so. But why? What has he got to hide? Funny enough Obama has never had a problem ripping open the sealed records of his political opponents. Every step of his career Obama has beaten his opponents by having sealed documents just happen to be publicly exposed by anonymous sources. But not Obama. His records are always unavailable (and never leaked). Obama always seems to have powerful forces on his side. <a href="http://ad.doubleclick.net/jump/prnd/prn-theblaze;prntype=web;prngenre=conservative_talk;prnpage=interior;pos=bottom;sz=300x250;u=prntype*web!prngenre*conservative_talk!prnpage*interior!pos*bottom!sz*300x250;ord=123456789?" target="_blank"><img src="http://ad.doubleclick.net/ad/prnd/prn-theblaze;prntype=web;prngenre=conservative_talk;prnpage=interior;pos=bottom;sz=300x250;u=prntype*web!prngenre*conservative_talk!prnpage*interior!pos*bottom!sz*300x250;ord=123456789?" border="0" alt="" /></a>Did he attend Columbia as a foreign student? That was the educated guess I made in my appearance on “Hannity” on Fox News a year ago. The only photo of Obama from his Columbia days was in his off-campus apartment with a roommate described by USA Today as a Pakistani national, pot smoker, and cocaine abuser. If you’re a foreign student, you live in housing off-campus with other foreign students. Barack Obama (Photo Credit: FILE) That would also explain how he transferred to Columbia. Transferring into an Ivy League school is all but impossible. I did a little digging and found out only 3 transfer students in all of America were accepted into Columbia in the past academic year. Three students out of 315 million Americans. Yet those who knew Obama at Occidental called him a pot smoker and partier who rarely attended class. You’re telling me that a poor student, with that record, at an average college, was accepted for transfer into prestigious Columbia University? Only if he was an exotic Indonesian foreign student transferring into a college that desperately wanted to claim an ethnically and globally diverse student body. Still that might explain how Obama got into Columbia. But where was he for those two years? My gut instincts say something is wrong with “the Obama at Columbia story.” Very wrong. Rancid. But until now, I was the only one publicly voicing my suspicions. That just changed in a big way. Meet Professor Henry Graff, perhaps the most legendary and honored professor ever at Columbia University. He was THE American History and Diplomatic History professor at Columbia for 46 years. And he is more emphatic than yours truly that there are no Obama footprints at Columbia. I was put on Professor Graff’s trail by another Columbia classmate, skeptical about Obama’s story. He told me that Professor Graff had been the speaker for the Class of ’53 last weekend at Columbia. My friend was watching Graff answer questions from the crowd when he was asked about Obama at Columbia. Graff said, “I have my doubts he ever went here.” Professor Henry Graff (Photo: Columbia University) I did some digging and located Graff’s home phone number. I called him yesterday. Now retired, he was delighted to hear from me. He agreed to go on the record about Obama. Unlike Obama, Professor Graff clearly remembered me. He was thrilled to hear from his former student. I was in several of Graff’s classes and he remembered me like it was yesterday. He sounded great- like he hasn’t lost any of his trademark sharpness in 30 years since we last met. I was honored to learn that this legendary historian has been following my political career for many years. But he had no such cheery things to say about the President. Graff said, “I taught at Columbia for 46 years. I taught every significant American politician that ever studied at Columbia. I know them all. I’m proud of them all. Between American History and Diplomatic History, one way or another, they all had to come through my classes. Not Obama. I never had a student with that name in any of my classes. I never met him, never saw him, never heard of him.” Even more importantly, Professor Graff knew the other history and political science professors. “None of the other Columbia professors knew him either” said Graff. Graff concluded our interview by saying, “I’m very upset by the whole story. I am angry when I hear Obama called ‘the first President of the United States from Columbia University.’ I don’t consider him a Columbia student. I have no idea what he did on the Columbia campus. No one knows him.” There is something wrong with Obama’s story- I know that. Many of my classmates at last weekend’s 30th reunion knew that. Now the most beloved Professor ever at Columbia joins us in publicly questioning the story. Obama is either the ghost of Columbia, or the perfect Manchurian candidate. But something smells rotten at Columbia. Editor’s note: Wayne Allyn Root joined us on the June 4, 2013 edition of the BlazeCast. He discusses his experience at his 30th class reunion at Columbia and answers extensive questions about his theories about Barack Obama at Columbia: http://www.theblaze.com/contributions/ghost-of-columbia-part-ii-legendary-columbia-professor-never-heard-of-obama/

  7. 1 First, you must train your cat to use a home-made cardboard litter box, if you have not already done so. (If your box does not have a one-piece bottom, add a cardboard that fits inside, so you have a false bottom that is smooth and strong. This way the box will not become soggy and fall out at the bottom. The grocery store will have extra flat cardboards which you can cut down to fit exactly inside your box.) Be sure to use torn up newspaper, not kitty litter. Stop using kitty litter. (When the time comes you cannot put sand in a toilet.) Once your cat is trained to use a cardboard box, start moving the box around the room, towards the bathroom. If the box is in a corner, move it a few feet from the corner, but not very noticeably. If you move it too far, he may go to the bathroom in the original corner. Do it gradually. You've got to get him thinking. Then he will gradually follow the box as you move it to the bathroom. (Important: if you already have it there, move it out of the bathroom, around, and then back. He has to learn to follow it. If it is too close to the toilet, to begin with, he will not follow it up onto the toilet seat when you move it there.) A cat will look for his box. He smells it. 2 Now, as you move the box, also start cutting the brim of the box down, so the sides get lower. Do this gradually. Finally, you reach the bathroom and, eventually, the toilet itself. Then, one day, prepare to put the box on top of the toilet. At each corner of the box, cut a little slash. You can run string around the box, through these slashes, and tie the box down to the toilet so it will not fall off. Your cat will see it there and jump up to the box, which is now sitting on top of the toilet (with the sides cut down to only an inch or so.) Don't bug the cat now, don't rush him, because you might throw him off. Just let him relax and go there for awhile-maybe a week or two. Meanwhile, put less and less newspaper inside the box. 3 One day, cut a small hole in the very center of his box, less than an apple-about the size of a plum-and leave some paper in the box around the hole. Right away he will start aiming for the hole and possibly even try to make it bigger. Leave the paper for awhile to absorb the waste. When he jumps up he will not be afraid of the hole because he expects it. At this point you will realize that you have won. The most difficult part is over. From now on, it is just a matter of time. In fact, once when I was cleaning the box and had removed it from the toilet, my cat jumped up anyway and almost fell in. To avoid this, have a temporary flat cardboard ready with a little hole, and slide it under the toilet lid so he can use it while you are cleaning, in case he wants to come and go, and so he will not fall in and be scared off completely. You might add some newspaper up there too, while you are cleaning, in case your cat is not as smart as Nightlife was. 4 Now cut the box down completely until there is no brim left. Put the flat cardboard, which is left, under the lid of the toilet seat, and pray. Leave a little newspaper, still. He will rake it into the hole anyway, after he goes to the bathroom. Eventually, you can simply get rid of the cardboard altogether. You will see when he has got his balance properly. Don't be surprised if you hear the toilet flush in the middle of the night. A cat can learn how to do it, spurred on by his instinct to cover up. His main thing is to cover up. If he hits the flush knob accidentally and sees that it cleans the bowl inside, he may remember and do it intentionally. Also, be sure to turn the toilet paper roll around so that it won't roll down easily if the cat paws it. The cat is apt to roll it into the toilet, again with the intention of covering up- the way he would if there were still kitty litter. It took me about three or four weeks to toilet train my cat, Nightlife. Most of the time is spent moving the box very gradually to the bathroom. Do it very slowly and don't confuse him. And, remember, once the box is on the toilet, leave it a week or even two. The main thing to remember is not to rush or confuse him. Good luck. Since 1981, the program has launched five space shuttles (Columbia, Challenger, Discovery, Atlantis, Endeavor) into orbit, or 132 flights in total. Here, Matt Melis, a NASA engineer, has compiled what he calls the “best of the best, state of the art†video produced by the space shuttle program. And he has stitched it into a 45 minute tribute video, called Ascent, that narrates the anatomy of a space launch, from start to finish. A great visual way to commemorate the space shuttle program, and the people who filmed it… NOTE: The video remains dark for the first nine seconds http://www.openculture.com/2010/12/the_best_of_nasa_space_shuttle_video_1981-2010.html

He got the part, of course, and his star rose rapidly along with the show’s. By 1978 Belushi could boast of having the number one late-night television show (SNL), the number one movie (Animal House) and the number one musical album (The Blues Brothers’ Briefcase Full of Blues). But sadly it all came crashing down 30 years ago this month–on March 5 1982–when he died of a drug overdose. In this clip we remember the young Belushi: cocky, talented, with a brilliant future ahead of him. http://www.openculture.com/2012/03/john_belushis_improvised_screen_test_for_saturday_night_live_1975.html

Image Format 87A begatteth Graphics Interchange Format or GIF (rhymes with a certain brand of peanut butter, the video history above helpfully points out). The proliferations of free online GIF generators begatteth the countless annoying, smarmy, boneheaded animated loops you’ve seen junking up emails, profile pictures, and MySpace pages. Of course, some of them are also pretty cool, which is why they’re being celebrated with a festival at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. No tickets necessary. Moving the Still: A GIF Festival will be screening through June on the outdoor electronic billboard meant to promote upcoming and current attractions. Conceivably, viewers with wheels and time to spare could take it in on an endless loop of their own, by circling up Flatbush to Lafayette, then moving up when the light changes, battling traffic from the nearby Barclays Center on the return leg. What do we stand to see in this festival? The video history leads us to believe that anything is possible, though certain things—accidental happenings, laser cats, colorful barfing (…wait, colorful barfing?)—have a built in appeal. http://www.openculture.com/
  14. http://youtu.be/7RW8PFJTJJY Posted: 25 Apr 2013 05:06 PM PDT There are certain legends surrounding Brian Wilson, the troubled genius behind the Beach Boys. One is that he hates going to the beach. He never went surfing, even though he wrote classic songs like “Surfer Girl,” “Surfin’ Safari,” and “Surfin’ USA.” Another is that he basically stayed in bed for two or three years in the early 1970s, weighted down by drugs and depression. In this classic comedy sketch from the summer of 1976, John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd play a pair of California Highway Patrol officers who burst into the bedroom of Wilson’s Bel Air home and force the reclusive musician to get up and go surfing. “Brian,” says Aykroyd, “we have a citation here for you sir under Section 936A of the California Catch a Wave Statute. Brian, you’re in violation of Paragraph 12: failing to surf, neglecting to use a state beach for surfing purposes, and otherwise avoiding surfboards, surfing and surf.” The scene is from the NBC television special It’s OK, which was produced by Saturday Night Live creator Lorne Michaels during the break between SNL‘s first and second seasons. It was directed by the show’s resident flmmaker Gary Weis. The one-hour special was organized to celebrate the Beach Boys’ 15th anniversary and to promote their album, 15 Big Ones. Wilson had just rejoined the group, and the special was part of the “Brian’s Back” publicity campaign. The program, which is currently available on European-formatted DVD as The Beach Boys: Good Vibrations Tour, includes an interview of Wilson in bed, comedic scenes of band members doing offbeat things, and live footage from a July 3, 1976 Beach Boys concert at Anaheim Stadium. In the two intercut scenes above, Mike Love leads the Beach Boys onstage in a performance of “Surfin’ USA” as Wilson is forced into the ocean in his bath robe. “Okay, Mr. Wilson,” says Aykroyd. “Here’s your wave.” http://youtu.be/7RW8PFJTJJY
