The lempira has remained at an exchange rate of approximately 19 to the US dollar since August 2005. Beginning on Monday, the lempira will be allowed to fluctuate 7 percent below or above Lps 18.89. As such, the new policy is being characterized as a "revaluation", rather than a devaluation. Honduran economist Guillermo Matamoros, however, argues that the move is not exactly a revaluation because the BCH will not be fixing the lempira at a set value. BCH president María Elena Mondragón explained the government's monetary decision was influenced by an improvement in international prices for Honduras' main export commodities, coffee and bananas, as well as continued growth in remittances from abroad, estimated at US$2.7 billion annually. The president of the Honduran Maquila Association, Daniel Facussé, noted that having a more flexible exchange rate will more accurately reflect the economic situation in the country, thus providing potential investors a more accurate measure of the investment climate. Some within Honduras' business community speculate the lempira may reach 20 to the US dollar by December unless the economy shows strong signs of recovery. (7/23/11)
