NC deputy: Maliki ready to submit security ministry candidates amid ongoing disputes

Saturday, April 16th 2011 2:07 PM

Baghdad, April 16 (AKnews) – An MP from the National Coalition (NC)’s State of Law Coalition (SLC) said on Saturday that the Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki will submit the names of the candidates for the as yet unassigned security ministries in the coming week.

Abbas al-Bayati told AKnews that the NC has authorized Mailiki to announce the nominees for the disputed posts despite ongoing disagreements between the political blocs.

The news comes just days after the SLC pointed an accusatory finger at the al-Iraqiya List for stalling the selection process by failing to agree on their own candidates for the posts.

Prominent SLC leader Ali al-Shala told AKnews that al-Iraqiya had nominated candidates and then withdrawn them because of internal differences.

In a press release from the NC issued by the coalition’s Ibrahim al-Rikabi last week, Maliki vowed to resolve the security ministry issue in the coming week.

Maliki has been heading the Ministries of Defense, the Interior and National Security since parliament gave the vote of confidence to his cabinet line-up on December 21.

The three key ministries have remained unallocated due to ongoing disputes over the right to lead them according to the power-sharing agreements struck between the political blocs in December last year prior to the formation of the current government.
