blanc
By Hussein al-Yaaqoubi Azzaman, October 5, 2010 Iraqi rebels were planning to take over the restive province of Diyala, northeast of Baghdad, but their bid was foiled, intelligence and government officials said. They said the plan mounted to “a coup” in which the rebel elements would have killed the governor, senor military officers and head of security forces. “Several suspects have been apprehended as well as a (government) security officer and a consultant,” said Delair Hassan, head of the security commission in the province. Diyala, of which Baaquba is the capital, is still believed to be a major stronghold for al-Qaeda and resistance groups unhappy with the presence of U.S. occupation troops and seeking the overthrow of the government. “We have foiled their plan,” confirmed an intelligence officer, refusing to be named. Hassan said certain armed groups “have been hatching the coup for several weeks”. Had they succeeded, there would have been a lot of bloodshed, he said. Part of the plan was to blow up the provincial headquarters with a car-bomb and explosive belts, according to Hassan. “Collaborators would have helped in sneaking the vehicle and the belts into the building.” He said the vehicle was found in one of the orchards and the belts inside the building. azzaman.com This is in reference to meds chat so we don't get too worked up today. This appears to be an isolated incident of rebel activity. GO RVVVVVVVVV

Circlewood
This is so typical of Iraq we get good news last night of a possible "meeting of the minds " with Alawi and Maliki, and then now a attempted coup. One step forward/ one step back. But on a positive note, they stopped this attempt. Keep your fingers crossed.

vianney71
This is a sure sign of a positive movement to form a real gov. The rebels are sturred up & see no way to legally get power now that malaki was set straight . This is the natural response. We just now need our forces to keep things under control, long enough for the seating of the gov and naturally the RV
Roscoboy007
I hope that they did foil the entire coup plan. This may get the ball moving quicker knowing that the people are ready to take matters into their own hands. That is the "PRO" to this. The "CON" is that if there is a attempted coup then this will set the formation back by months. I went throught the coup attempt in Port of Spain and was locked down for 10 days in the embassy. It was not fun and my last 3 months in country were that of active military on the streets and cerfews. Lets hope this does not effect the formation.
