Shafaq News / On Wednesday, the US Central Command claimed responsibility for the attack that targeted the leader of the Hezbollah Brigades (Abu Baqir al-Saadi), in the Al-Mashtal area, east of the capital, Baghdad, indicating that he was responsible for the attacks targeting its forces in the region.

The command said in a statement, seen by Shafaq News Agency, “At 9:30 pm on February 7, US Central Command (CENTCOM) forces launched a unilateral strike in Iraq in response to attacks on US service members, killing a battalion commander.” "Hezbollah is responsible for direct planning and participation in attacks on American forces in the region. There are no indications of collateral damage or civilian casualties at this time."

The statement added, "The United States will continue to take the necessary measures to protect our people. We will not hesitate to hold accountable anyone who threatens the safety of our forces."

A short while ago, the US Department of Defense (the Pentagon) commented on the bombing that targeted a leader in the “Iraqi resistance factions” in the Al-Mashtal area, east of the capital, Baghdad.

The Pentagon said, "We are aware of reports regarding the attack in Baghdad and will announce at the appropriate time."

Meanwhile, an American official confirmed to the Qatari Al Jazeera channel, “Today, American forces launched a strike in Iraq.”

Shafaq News / A security source revealed, on Wednesday evening, details of the drone bombing that targeted a vehicle carrying a leader in the Iraqi Hezbollah Brigades and a warehouse of the Popular Mobilization Forces in the Al-Mashtal and Al-Baladiyat areas, east of the capital, Baghdad.

The source told Shafaq News Agency that the bombing resulted in the killing of the leader of the brigades, known as “Abu Baqir,” and two of his companions, and the wounding of a fourth, explaining that it is not known whether (Abu Baqir) was inside the vehicle or happened to be passing by at the time of the accident.

The source stated that preliminary investigations showed that the missiles used in the bombing were of a low-fragmentation type, the Hellfire type, which uses the heat method, indicating that one of the missiles fell on the approaches to the area of the incident, where there is a warehouse belonging to the Popular Mobilization Forces.

According to a Shafaq News Agency correspondent, the crowds rejecting this incident were still gathering until late at night at the scene of the incident and chanting, “No, no, America...America is the Great Satan.”

The source indicated that the closure of the road leading to the accident continues, pointing out that forensic experts are present in the area of the accident to raise criminal evidence.

He stated, “The type of vehicle targeted is a Jeep, and talk of a Tahoe or Land Cruiser is incorrect.”

This bombing coincided with another explosion in the Ur neighborhood, east of Baghdad, as well. However, according to the source, it was an electricity transformer explosion that happened to explode minutes after the vehicle was targeted.

In this context, the Iraqi Joint Operations Command announced that it was investigating the bombing of the vehicle, to determine the method and source of the targeting.

On the other hand, a Pentagon official reported to the Emirati “Sky News Arabia” and the Qatari “Al Jazeera” channels that the US Air Force had launched a strike in Iraq.

An American official told Al Jazeera, "We confirm that American forces launched a strike today in Iraq."

This official also said, “The United States launched an attack today in Baghdad, targeting a high-value individual target.”

Reuters also said that he was "the highest-ranking Iraqi official assassinated by the United States in Iraq since the assassination of Abu Mahdi Al-Muhandis."

Later, the US Central Command officially claimed responsibility for this attack, saying that it targeted a senior leader responsible for attacks targeting its forces in the region.

For its part, the Popular Mobilization Forces officially announced the killing of “Abu Baqir” by publishing a picture of him on its official website.
