London, Brussels and Washington impose new sanctions on the Iranian Revolutionary Guard

Baghdad - Nas

On Monday, Britain announced, in coordination with the United States and the European Union, the imposition of new sanctions on officials in Iran, including officials of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, on the grounds of accusations of "violations" of human rights.

A statement issued by the British Foreign Office said that the new sanctions targeted 4 leaders of the Revolutionary Guards, "whose soldiers under their command opened fire on unarmed demonstrators, killing many people, including children, and arbitrarily detained and tortured demonstrators."

British Foreign Secretary James Cleverly stated, "The Iranian regime is responsible for the brutal suppression of the Iranian people and for exporting bloodshed around the world. That is why we have over 300 sanctions imposed on Iran, including the entire Revolutionary Guard."

The statement indicated that Britain has imposed sanctions on more than 70 Iranian officials and entities since October 2022, and that the number of individuals and entities included in the sanctions list has reached 300 individuals and entities.

The statement said the European Union, Britain and the United States had taken "consistent and coordinated actions to hold Tehran accountable, and announced sanctions on a monthly basis in response to human rights violations."

Mounting tension

The recent wave of sanctions comes in light of escalating tension between Tehran and the West against the background of several issues, most notably the authorities’ handling of the protests that erupted last September, protesting the death of the young woman, Mahsa Amini, while she was being held by the morality police, as well as the West’s accusation of Tehran of providing military support to Russia in its war. against Ukraine.

Hundreds, including dozens of members of the security forces, were killed during the protests, which included raising slogans against the authorities, and the Iranian judiciary announced the issuance of 18 "death" sentences for attacks related to the protests, 4 of which were carried out.

Iranian officials have previously accused what they described as Tehran's "enemies" of standing behind the protests, which they consider a large part of as "riots", while several Western parties, led by Washington, London and Brussels, have expressed support for these moves, which Iran considers "interference". in its internal affairs.

The European Union has previously imposed sanctions, including freezing assets and banning the issuance of visas, on more than 60 Iranian officials and entities against the backdrop of suppressing demonstrations, and London and Berlin have taken similar measures.

Iran has previously responded to such measures by placing individuals and entities on its sanctions list, including preventing them from visiting Iran and freezing any assets they may have on its soil.
