BAGHDAD, IRAQ

Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki has no chance of forming a new government, a member of the Shiite Iraqi National Alliance announced Monday.

Iraq is still without a government nearly five months after March 7 elections for the 325-member Council of Representatives. Lawmakers from rival coalitions are at odds over who will become the next president, parliamentary speaker and prime minister.

Qassim al-Araji, a member of the INA, told the Voices of Iraq news agency Monday that his bloc was distancing itself from Maliki as the next prime minister.

"We still stick to (an alliance) with Maliki's State of Law but in case we separated from them we have other options, which are the other four blocs," he added.

Maliki's State of Law coalition lost the election by just two seats to the Iraqiya slate of former interim Prime Minister Iyad Allawi.

State of Law had a session Monday in Baghdad that didn't include the prime minister. Party officials said that Maliki was preoccupied with his executive duties.

Maliki, during a weekend meeting, with U.S. officials stressed that Iraqi political issues were internal matters.

U.S. combat forces are preparing to leave Iraq on Aug. 31 under the terms of a bilateral security agreement reached in 2008.
