Iraq Receives 1st Batch of South Korean T-50 Aircraft

ERBIL — A number of South Korean fighter jets have been delivered to Iraq on Thursday.

In total, Iraq is to receive 24 T-50 jets. The exact number of jets included in this delivery was not specified by Anwar Hamma, the Iraqi commander of the air force. However, according to Iraqi local sources the shipment consisted of six planes.

Iraqi pilots and maintenance technicians, who have been sent to receive training in South Korea have also returned.

According to the Iraqi Ministry of Defense, the deal between the two countries for the jets and the training was made in 2013.

Hamma said the jets would soon be utilized in the ongoing fight against the Islamic State.

In 2013, Iraqi former PM Nouri al-Maliki announced the signing of a contract with the Korean Ministry of Defense for the purchase of 24 T-50 aircraft.

According to the deal, the process of delivery of the aircraft would've begun in April of 2016 after the completion of the Swairah airport by the Iraqi government. The airport was however not ready and Baghdad therefore has been paying 1 million dollars to South Korea every month as a financial fine for not being able to receive the aircraft.

The deal has been considered by Iraqi MPs as one of the biggest corruption case which occurred due to the lack of an airstrip for the aircraft and the fines paid by Iraq to South Korea as a result of the delays in the receipt of the aircraft is wasting public wealth.
