KDP and PUK decide to sign a new strategic agreement

Shafaq News / The two main parties in Kurdistan region ; Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP)and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) have agreed on Thursday, on signing a new

strategic agreement between them to deal with the new phase in Iraq and Kurdistan, declaring the formation of a supreme committee to be formed in a month to formulate a new agreement.

This Came during a joint press conference of the major parties and delegations, vice president of KDP and head of the regional government , Nechirvan Barzani and the official of the working body of PUK, Mullah Bakhtiar, attended by "Shafaq News".

Barzani said that the relationship between the two parties must be strengthened because the circumstances and reasons which called for signing the strategic agreement between them still remain , pointing to the emergence of new developments and new powers on both the Kurdish and Iraqi field that made the two parties review the previous agreement according to these developments.

He added that a joint committee was formed under his chairmanship and Mullah Bakhtiar from KDP to negotiate and dialogue to reach a drafting of a new agreement that meets the requirements of the new circumstances, pointing to specify a period of one month to the new agreement to be completed and signed.

Barzani explained that new stage differ from the stage in years 2006-2007 and require them to do more efforts to reach a common ground for joint action, stressing that after signing the new agreement will be concluded to try to engage new parties as Change movement and the Islamist parties to consolidate joint action in order to achieve the higher interests of the Kurdish people.

For his part, official e official of the working body of PUK, Mullah Bakhtiar, on what Barzani said and stressed that the committee will form specialized committees to dialogue and negotiate to reach common points, each according to its competence, pointing to the seriousness of the parties to speed the access to the new agreement in the deadline.

On the visit of the delegation of the regional government to Baghdad to discuss outstanding issues with the federal government , Barzani confirmed that the nominated Candidate Kurdish Ministers for Abadi’s government traveled to Baghdad today to directly take over their positions, excluding the candidate of the Islamic Union, who said that he will go to Baghdad on Saturday.

He added that the policy in the region embodied in the willingness to solve problems with the federal government and that he had discussed this issue during joint meetings with the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, declaring the existence of a unified position of the parties regarding this file.

As for the date of the Kurdish delegation’s visit to Baghdad , he has confirmed that once Kurdish ministers take the oath and took their ministers , an agreement will be concluded agreement on setting a date for a visit to Baghdad and begin to negotiate on a solution to the outstanding problems in order to ensure the interests of everyone.

Barzani added that any talk about the performance of the new government headed by Haidar al-Abbadi is early; stressing that he believed that al-Abadi differs from his predecessor and carries news views and a willingness to solve problems

He added that "Our policy is to solve the problems with Baghdad," and expressed the hope that the work of Baghdad would have the same spirit in which Kurds work with.

On the issue of independence , Barzani said that, in principle not only the two main parties only , but all parties and Kurdish forces agree on the right of the Kurdish people to self-determination, adding that it is natural that there would be differences in views between the parties about required appointments and the mechanisms to do such a step.

On the issue of Minister Kurds declared head of the provincial government that "the Minister of the Kurds will go to Baghdad today, and our ministers are ready and when the meeting was held in Parliament will go to the parliament for the constitutional oath, and the policy of the Kurdistan Regional Government is that it wants to resolve differences with Baghdad, and we agreed with the National Union today on the need to make serious efforts to solve them, according to the interests of both sides.
