Iraq repairs old power plant, adding 600 megawatts to national grid

Iraq has rehabilitated an old power plant in the southern Province of Nasiriya as part of efforts to revive its national grid.

Built in the 1970s, the Nasiriya plant is one of the largest in Iraq but needed modernization to bring it on stream.

Part of Iraq’s power shortages are due to its aged plants, most of them constructed prior to the 1991 Gulf War over Kuwait.

These power plants had a capacity of up to 6000 megawatts but most of them had fallen to disrepair and were working much below their capacity.

Electricity Ministry’s spokesperson Musaib al-Mudaris said it took Iraqi technicians three months to repair the Nasiriya plant.

“More aged power plants are being repaired and some new plants will soon be operational,” he added.

If the ministry’s previous promises are taken seriously, Iraqis should have continuous power supply in a few months and for the first time since 1991.

Iraq currently imports electricity mainly from neighboring Iran, which ships 1000 megawatts to the country.
