Sayyed Muqtada Al Sadr refuses to participate in Iraq National Conference

Friday, January 27, 2012 13:20 GMT

Iraqi Sadr Movement leader Cleric Sayyed Muqtada Al Sadr announced, on Thursday, that he refuses to participate in the upcoming National Conference considering Al Hawza as mightily and superior.

“It is not my business to attend such congresses,” Sayyed Muqtada Al Sadr advanced in a reply, which Alsumarianews received a copy of, to a question about whether he would participate in the upcoming National Conference thereto. “Al Hawza is mightily and superior,” he added.

Iraqi President Jalal Talabani and his Parliament Speaker Osama Al Nujaifi agreed, in a meeting in Sulaymaniyah on December 27, upon holding a national congress for all Iraqi political parties in order to deal with state governance issues and bring forth related solutions. National Coalition, for its part, insisted on concluding the congress in Baghdad instead of Kurdistan calling for the congress’ support and for the depoliticization of Vice-President Tarek Al Hashemi’s case, a source revealed to Alsumaria.

At the end of December, Al Iraqiya List set the presence of a number of political parties, including Sayyed Muqtada Al Sadr, as a condition to its participation in the conference, a source said. Sayyed Muqtada Al Sadr will not attend the congress and no one can oblige him to, Sadr Movement replied on January 25.

Kurdistan Alliance MP Mouayad Al Tayeb announced, on January 22, that the meeting of National Congress preparatory committee scheduled for January 23 was postponed, a source reported. Iraqiya List and State of Law Coalition are to be held responsible for this postponement, Tayeb uttered stressing that disagreements between both parties can only be solved in the presence of Iraqi President Jalal Talabani in light of mutual accusations of attempting to obstruct the congress.
