"Iranian and Iraqi borders have the capacity to boost economic exchanges to USD80bln," Head of Iran-Iraq Parliamentary Friendship Group Heshmatollah Falahatpisheh said in a meeting with a delegation of Iraqi lawmakers of al-Iraqiya bloc here in Tehran on Monday. He also called on the two countries to work on the establishment of industrial towns and NGOs for making joint ventures in developmental and industrial fields, Iraq's reconstruction and further tourist facilities for the pilgrims of Iraq's holy shrines. The legislator stressed that the two countries' parliaments play a major role in the consolidation of cooperation between Tehran and Baghdad, and said, "The two countries' parliaments should pave the way for (the approval of) a law on the expansion and development of bilateral relations in economic, industrial and commercial fields." Iran and Iraq have enjoyed growing ties ever since the overthrow of the former Iraqi dictator, Saddam Hussein, during the 2003 US invasion of the Muslim country. Both sides are working on a series of plans to take wide strides in the expansion of their ties, in economic fields in particular. Last week Iranian Foreign Ministry Caretaker Ali Akbar Salehi reiterated Tehran's full preparedness to take part in Iraq's reconstruction plans. Speaking in a meeting with Iraq's Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki in Baghdad on Wednesday, Salehi reiterated that "the Islamic Republic of Iran attaches special value to its relations with Iraq." "There are abundant capacities for the two countries' cooperation and the Islamic Republic of Iran is ready to partner Baghdad in Iraq's reconstruction plans," Salehi said.
