Iraqi Media Commission challenges ban on live coverage of Friday protest

Thursday, February 24th 2011 11:07 AM

Baghdad, Feb. 24 (AKnews) - The Communications and Media Commission in Iraq said on Thursday that it has appealed to Baghdad Operations Command for permission to broadcast the Friday demonstration in Baghdad live.

In press conference yesterday the Baghdad Operations Command spokesman Maj. Gen. Qasim Atta announced a move to ban vehicles from the capital’s Tahrir Square where the protest is to take place.

Atta precised that the ban, implemented to protect the protestors from possible insurgent attacks, includes TV transmission vehicles and thus prevents live broadcasts of the rally.

Director of the media commission Safaa Rabei, told AKnews that so far there has been no final response to their request has been issued.

"The commission is currently looking negotiating with Baghdad Operations Command to allow a limited number of television stations to cover the event live," he said.

The public rally scheduled to take place in the Iraqi capital on Friday is widely expected to be the biggest to date.

A wave of public demonstrations has swept across the Iraqi provinces over recent weeks, with protestors condemning poor public services, administrative and financial corruption, rising unemployment and generally poor living conditions.

The protestors are calling for the promises made by the political blocs during last year’s election campaigns to be honored, thus resolving these issues.

Actually it is due to the massive threat of VBIED's over here that are due to be at the protests and threaten to kill scores of innocents. Being over here I can appreciate the extra security measures they are taking. But it's so easy to armchair quarterback on what you all in the U.S. see..LOL
