The Iraqi and Azerbaijani governments have signed today an Agreement on trade, economic, scientific, technical and cultural cooperation, according to a statement from the trade ministry.

The agreement was signed by Azerbaijan`s Deputy Premier Abid Sharifov and Iraqi Minister of Trade Safaa Al-Din Mohammad Al-Safi at the end of the two-day Iraqi-Azerbaijani committee’s meetings.

Al-Safi said his country was keen on development of cooperation with Azerbaijan. The Minister pointed out his visit would open new ways of cooperation between the two countries.

“We need support of friendly countries, including Azerbaijan to establish stability in our country,” the statement quoted al-Safi as saying.

He also expressed hope that such visits would contribute to boosting bilateral ties in various spheres.

For his part, Sharifov noted the volume of trade between the two countries constituted $ 50-60 million, added, ‘however, this falls well behind the potential of our countries’.

Sharifov underlined the necessity of expanding the bilateral economic cooperation, saying “today’s agreement will laid the foundations for strengthening it”.

Also Prime Minister of Azerbaijan Artur Rasizade has met the Iraqi minister.

Rasizade expressed assurance the Iraqi minister’s visit would contribute to boosting relations between the two countries.
