Egypt threatens Israel by suspending the "peace" treaty and militarizing the borders

Shafaq News / Today, Saturday, the American newspaper “The New York Times” reported Cairo’s “threat” to effectively suspend the 1979 peace treaty with Israel after the latter’s intention to storm Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip and force the residents of the Strip to migrate to Sinai, while it indicated that Cairo does not rule out “ Militarization of the border. (NOTE: The Egyptians (and Jordanians) don't want Palestinians in Egypt (or Jordan), because they always cause internal conflict. An example of their actions in Jordan decades ago, where they raised up their own army, and the Jordanians had to go to war with them, and they were expelled...RON)

The newspaper quoted a senior Western diplomat in Cairo as saying that Egyptian officials urged their Western counterparts to inform Israel that they considered any move to force Gazans to cross into Sinai as a violation that would effectively suspend the 1979 peace treaty.

According to the newspaper, another senior Western official, an American official, and an Israeli official said that the message was more direct, as Egypt threatened to suspend the treaty if the Israeli army pushed the residents of Gaza into Egypt.

The Israeli official said that the Egyptian government repeated this warning to US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, the American official said that Egypt has made clear that it is prepared to militarize its borders, perhaps with tanks, if the Palestinians begin to be pushed into Sinai.

The Israeli official said that military officers from both countries, who have a long-standing relationship of trust resulting from security cooperation around the border, are also speaking privately about a possible Israeli incursion into Rafah.

He added that in those discussions, the Egyptians asked Israel to limit the scope of the operation.

Two Egyptian security sources said that Cairo sent about 40 tanks and armored personnel carriers to northeastern Sinai in the past two weeks as part of a series of measures to enhance security on its border with the Gaza Strip.

The forces were deployed before Israel expanded its military operations to include the city of Rafah in southern Gaza, to which most of the Gaza Strip's residents were displaced in search of a safe haven, which exacerbated Egypt's fears of the possibility of forcing the Palestinians to leave the Gaza en masse.

Israeli warplanes bombed Rafah on Friday, and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered the army to prepare to evacuate the displaced.

Since the outbreak of war between Israel and Hamas on October 7, Egypt has erected a concrete border wall whose foundations extend into the ground 6 meters and are topped with barbed wire.

The two security sources said that Egypt also set up sand barriers and enhanced surveillance at border posts, according to Reuters.
