North Korea considers its southern neighbor an “enemy and in a state of war” and cancels all agreements

Shafaq News / The official Korean Central News Agency reported, on Thursday, that North Korea’s Supreme People’s Assembly voted in favor of canceling all agreements signed with South Korea regarding enhancing economic cooperation, amid the continued sharp deterioration in relations between the two Koreas.

 

The council, which is taking formal steps to adopt policy dictated by the ruling Workers' Party, voted to repeal laws regulating economic relations with Seoul, including the law on operating the Mount Kumgang tourism project.

 

The treks to the scenic mountain just north of the eastern border were a symbol of economic cooperation that began during the inter-Korean period of engagement in the early 2000s, attracting nearly two million South Korean visitors.

 

The project was suspended in 2008 after a South Korean tourist who lost his way into a restricted area was shot dead by North guards.

 

North Korea says it now considers its southern neighbor an enemy and in a state of war, and last year it canceled a military agreement that was signed in 2018 and was aimed at calming tensions near the military border that was determined under an armistice that ended the Korean War that took place between 1950 and 1953.

 

Separately, the agency reported that leader Kim Jong Un, on Wednesday, toured factories producing consumer goods and food and gave directions for developing the facilities as part of implementing a new regional policy.
