Consulate General of Armenia to Be Established in Erbil
ISTANBUL — President of Armenia, Serzh Sargsyan, has signed a decree on establishing a Consulate General of Armenia in Erbil, Iraq, on Monday.

“Governed by Part 1 of Article 15 of the RA law on Diplomatic Service, I decide: To establish a Consulate General of Armenia in Erbil City, Iraq. The respective consular district shall encompass the Kurdistan Region (Erbil, Sulaymaniyah, and Dohuk),” states the decree.

The decision to open a Consulate General in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq was adopted by the Armenian government during its session on March 2.

The decision was made with considerations of a growing Armenian community in the region and the usefulness of expanding bilateral relations with the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG).

Earlier in February during a meeting between Kurdistan Region President Masoud Barzani and Armenian Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandian on the sideline of Munich Security Conference, the sides discussed the opening of a diplomatic mission office in Erbil in hopes of boosting ties between the two nations.
