k98nights
Fatwa regarding female circumcision expected in coming days Saturday, June 19th 2010 5:52 PM Sulaimaniyah, June 19 (AKnews) – Kurdistan's High Committee for Fatwa is expected to deliver a ruling, in the coming days, on female circumcision practiced in the region, a member of the committee said Saturday. The Fatwa Committee will hold an expanded meeting in the coming days and will deliver a fatwa about female circumcision with a majority vote, Ahmed Shafii, said Saturday."We do not want to have fatwas on an individual level… until we hold discussions and issue a unanimous fatwa" Shafi said."This meeting of the high committee of fatwa will result in a strong fatwa which is important for Kurdistan Region" Ja'far Gwani, spokesman for the Kurdistan Islamic Scholars Union, said. This step by the fatwa committee comes only days after the Human Rights Watch in Kurdistan Region released a report earlier in Erbil city's Chwarchra Hotel about female circumcision which was critical of clerics.Gwani said the report talked about clerics "without conscience""In writing the report, our opinion was not asked about, and even for announcing the conclusions we were not informed, while it (the report) should have been transferred to the scholars in detail" he added. The reporter, Nadia Khalifa of the Human Rights Watch, said according to a survey conducted by the regional government's Ministry of Human Rights, out of 521 women between 14 to 22 years, 40 percent of them had been circumcised.ry AKnews http://www.aknews.com/en/aknews/1/156612/

FloridaChick
My heart goes out to the women and children of the ME. I pray for them. Freedom, peace, and prosperity are gifts from God and belong to every woman, man, and child on the face of God's earth. I believe the Kurds have the answers. cgbrown
Wow! No wonder they can't get a government in place. While trying to deal with government formation issuess they have to deal with these barbaric ideals as well. I can sure see a lot of ammendments to the constitution forthcoming. I just hope they get their financial act together before getting bogged down in these extended issues.
