SHANKSVILLE, Pa. (KDKA/AP) – A major fire is burning at the Flight 93 National Memorial in Somerset County, and reports say 9/11 artifacts are being burned in the blaze.

Officials say the fire has burned three administrative buildings at the Flight 93 National Memorial.

Ken Nacke, who’s brother was on flight 93, tells NewsRadio 1020 KDKA that he was told 9/11 artifacts are being burned in the fire.

“It’s very heartbreaking, it really brings you back to that day,” Nacke told NewsRadio 1020 KDKA’s Bill Rehkopf. “Some of the items from the temporary memorial may have been lost.”

Nacke was instrumental in securing fundraising for the memorial, and working with the victims’ families.

“We gave a lot of personal stuff to the memorial, that we wanted to be shared with everyone, the more and more I think about it, the more heartbreaking it becomes,” Nacke said.

The Congressional Gold Medal awarded to the Flight 93 National Memorial was also being stored at the site, but Nacke says that was supposed to be housed in a fireproof safe.

Nacke says messages, and notes that were left on a temporary fence after the 9/11 crash were being stored in the area where the fire burned.

National Park Service spokesman Mike Litterst says no injuries were reported Friday afternoon.

He did not know the cause or extent of the damage.

He says the affected buildings serve as the park’s headquarters and include the superintendent’s office.

Litterst says the flames did not affect the memorial itself or constructionicon1.png of the visitors center.

Smoke can be seen billowing for miles.

Several fire departments are reportedly on the scene battling the blaze.
