BAGHDAD, April 27 (UPI) -- Several hundred prisoners in Iraq were ordered released Tuesday because of a lack of evidence, the Iraqi prime minister's office said.

A statement issued by Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki said the order came from a request by a panel formed by Maliki in his capacity as commander of Iraq's military, the Kuwaiti news agency KUNA reported.

Maliki's statement offered no details surrounding the release of the 379 detainees, KUNA said.

Media accounts recently reported the existence of a secret prison in al-Muthanna Airport in Baghdad and of detainees held their without trial, which the Iraqi government

has denied.
