Wednesday, 27 March 2013 14:44

Shafaq News / Judge Medhat al-Mahmoud, the head of the Iraqi Supreme Judicial Council has been referred to Criminal tribunal on criminal charges, a lawmaker said.

Sabah al-Saadi, an independent parliament member said in a press conference held at the building of the Council of Representatives and attended by "Shafaq News" that “the chief prosecutor has referred Judge Medhat al-Mahmoud to the High Criminal Court" a judicial body considers the crimes of the former regime.

The reason behind such referral is that al-Mahmoud accused of "criminal crimes against humanity," al-Saadi said.

The accountability and justice committee de-baathified al-Mahmoud one day post his dismissal from office as the Head of the Supreme Judicial Council.

The decision came as a response to popular calls demanded the removal of al-Mahmoud from office because of affiliation to the Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki.

The decision was rejected by Maliki and his State of Law coalition; they considered it a politically motivated resolution.
