Kurd leader, US envoy discuss preparations for Iraqi nat''l conf. 3/3/2012 8:37:00 PM | Gulf News text-size-minus.pngreset.pngtext-size-plus.png IRBIL, March 3 (KUNA) -- President of Iraq's semi-autonomous region of Kurdistan Masoud Barzani received on Saturday US Ambassador to Iraq James Jeffery to review the preparations for an expanded national conference for all political forces of the country.

The meeting, held at Salah-Eddin resort here, touched upon the latest developments in Iraq and the efforts aiming to break the current political stalemate, a source in Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) told KUNA.

The two sides highlighted the need to cement the national unity of Iraq and build a genuine national partnership in order to get the country out of the current political crisis, the source said.

They also discussed the situations in some countries of the Arabian Gulf region and the relationship between the KRG in Arbil - the provincial capital of Kurdistan, and the federal government in Baghdad, he added.

The country has entered a political standoff since the US military pullout from Iraq in December 2011 when an arrest warrant was issued for leader of the Iraqi List bloc and Vice President Tareq Al-Hashimi under the charge of supporting terrorism.

The crisis was further worsened when Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri Al-Maliki asked the parliament to strip Saleh Al-Mutlaq - an MP from the Iraqi List, off immunity, thus prompting the Iraqi List to boycott the parliament sessions.

Barzani, together with Iraqi President Jalal Talabani, are trying to use his good offices to reconcile the List and Al-Maliki's State of Law Alliance through the planned national conference. (end)
