  13. Rima Karaki tells London-based Sheikh Hani Al-Siba’i: ‘In this studio, I run the show,’ during tense exchange on al-Jadeed TV about Islamic State Aisha Gani @aishagani Monday 9 March 2015 15.52 GMT A video has gone viral of a Lebanese television presenter who cut short an interview with a London-based Islamist scholar after he told her to “shut up”. Rima Karaki, a TV host and university professor, told the scholar: “In this studio, I run the show.” . During the discussion about reports of Christians joining Islamic State (Isis), which aired on Al-Jadeed TV on 2 March, Sheikh Hani Al-Siba’i, an Egyptian scholar, told Karaki: “Are you done? Shut up so I can talk.” The presenter responded by saying: “How can a respected sheikh like yourself tell a TV host to shut up?” Siba’i then said: “It’s beneath me to be interviewed by you. You are a woman who ….” His microphone is then cut off. Karaki stopped the interview after just three minutes, saying: “Just one second. Either there is mutual respect or the conversation is over.” The argument began when Karaki interrupted the scholar, who said Christians joining Isis was “nothing new” and was similar to people joining the “leftist revolutionary movement” in the 1970s, such as the Red Brigades in Italy and the Baader Meinhof group in Germany. The host asked him to focus on the question instead of going on a historical tangent, and asked: “At present, what slogans are used to attract [Christians] to these groups?” Siba’i said: “Listen, don’t cut me off. I will answer as I please,” adding: “I will not answer the way you like, because I’m here to to serve the idea in which I believe.” Kiraki explained that there was limited time and said: “Please don’t get all worked up. We respect you and know you want to give a complete answer.” Siba’i said: “You think you are so high and mighty?” To which Kiraki said: “Go on. But do not call me names.” She added: “If we start discussing history, we won’t have enough time for our topic.” The video clip shared by MEMRI, a US-based Middle East media watchdog, has been viewed on YouTube more than 2.3m times since it was posted last week. This article was amended on 9 March 2015 to correct a quote from the video. 15. Ivana Hoffmann, 19, from Duisburg in Germany, died on Saturday fighting for the Turkish Marxist-Leninist Communist Party against Isis in Syria Louise Osborne in Berlin Monday 9 March 2015 18.43 GMT A 19-year-old woman has reportedly become the first female western fighter to die in battle against Islamic State (Isis) in northern Syria. Ivana Hoffmann, who was known by the nom de guerre Avaşin Tekoşin Güneş, was killed on Saturday morning while fighting alongside Kurdish fighters in the Syrian region of Tel Tamir, according to a statement published by the Turkish-Kurdish communist group Marxist-Leninist Communist Party (MLKP) on Monday. Hoffmann died at around 3am as a result of an exchange of fire between the People’s Protection Unit (YPG) with which she was stationed and around a dozen Isis extremists, said the statement. The young woman is thought to have travelled to Turkey to fight against Isis around six months ago. Identifying herself in backed with a red MLKP flag, Hoffmann says she was born in Germany on 1 September, 1995, and first found out about the party in 2011. Looking directly into the camera, she says that she travelled to the autonomous region of Rojava in 2014 to “defend the revolution” and to “hold high the party’s flag”. The young woman, who is reported to have had African roots, lived in the western German town of Duisburg and was believed to have attended the Aletta-Haniel comprehensive school, according to the German local newspaper the Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung. The information could not immediately be confirmed. In another YouTube video purportedly showing Hoffmann later, with her face covered with a scarf and holding a rifle in what appears to be the Turkish-Syrian border region, the young woman says in German she has been there for a week. She adds that she is with the unit “to fight for humanity” and “to fight for freedom”. According to tweets posted on Monday, a memorial for the young woman is to be held in Duisburg on 14 March from 3pm. Hoffmann is not the first European to have died fighting Isis extremists alongside Kurdish fighters in Syria. Last week former British royal marine Konstandinos Erik Scurfield died in Al-Hol in Hasaka province, close to the Iraq border. A spokesman for Germany’s foreign ministry said it was unable to comment. Ivana Hoffmann. 17. Massive switch to electric cars could save drivers £1,000 ($ 1,500) a year on fuel costs, if infrastructure is built to support the vehicles Arthur Neslen Tuesday 10 March 2015 06.00 GMT Electric cars could cut the UK’s oil imports by 40% and reduce drivers’ fuel bills by £13bn if deployed on a large scale, according to a new study. An electric vehicle surge would deliver an average £1,000 of fuel savings a year per driver, and spark a 47% drop in carbon emissions by 2030, said the Cambridge Econometrics study. The paper, commissioned by the European Climate Foundation, said that air pollutants such as nitrogen oxide and particulates would be all but eliminated by mid-century, with knock-on health benefits from reduced respiratory diseases valued at over £1bn. But enjoying the fruits of a clean vehicle boom will require an infrastructure roll-out soon, as the analysis assumes a deployment of over 6m electric vehicles by 2030 – growing to 23m by 2050 – powered by ambitious amounts of renewable energy. “There will be a transition in the next five-10 years but you won’t see a sudden shift to electric vehicles until consumers have got over their ‘range anxiety’ concerns and that will only happen with infrastructure spending,” said Philip Summerton , one of the report’s authors. With recharging stations still relatively few and far between, the ‘range anxiety’ fear that battery-powered vehicles could run out of power has been a notorious deterrent for consumers. One study earlier this month found that such concerns were more common among less experienced electric vehicle drivers. But the EU also believes that a lack of recharging infrastructure is holding back the budding industry. Two years ago the European commission proposed a €10bn (£7bn) public works programme, which would have exponentially grown recharging station numbers across Europe. In the UK alone, their numbers would have multiplied from 703 in 2012 to 1.22m in 2020. But the Tory-led government helped to successfully oppose the measure because of the costs involved in ensuring that a minimum 10% of recharging stations were publicly accessible in every country. Despite this, British subsidies of about £5,000 for new electric car sales have helped the industry develop, industry sources say. The knock-on benefits to the UK’s GDP from reduced oil costs and increased vehicle spending could amount to between £2.4-£5bn by 2030, the study says. Between 7,000-19,000 jobs would also be created. “It can no longer come as a surprise to anyone that reducing emissions delivers commercial benefits to industry as well as benefits to the environment and consumers,” said Darren Lindsey, a spokesman for the tyre-maker, Michelin. “To maximise those benefits, however, international policymakers have to create a consistent and robust regulatory framework.” An Automobile Association (AA) poll of 16,000 drivers last December found that 71% expected to change their car in the net five years. One-third said they would opt for a petrol-fuelled vehicle, one quarter for diesel, 5% would pick a hybrid and just 1% would choose an electric car. However, fuel economy and low emissions were mentioned by 84% and 55% of drivers respectively as factors they looked for in selecting a new vehicle. “Our research shows that drivers’ attitudes are changing when it comes to choice of car. Drivers want fuel efficient cars that are also reliable, safe, comfortable and easy to service. However there is still a massive leap of faith to be made before drivers fully embrace full zero emission vehicles,” said Edmund king, the AA president. Information campaigns and increased carbon labelling schemes are also needed, a launch event in the House of Commons was told on Monday. Integrating cars running on hydrogen fuel cells into car industry plans will be another challenge to the clean car industry, Summerton said. “First you have to figure out whether to shift the hydrogen in trucks or build a pipeline [to feed refuelling stations],” he told the Guardian. “Governments are reluctant to pick technology winners, but the downside is that it makes it difficult to start building the supporting infrastructure.” “When consumers feel confident that a technology has the right supporting technology, the market will move in that direction,” he added. Electric car boom will require an infrastructure rollout to win over consumers who are worried about batteries running out of power.
