  10. My nomination was not as a result of foreign pressures, says Abdulmahdi September 7, 2010 - 07:55:27 BAGHDAD / Aswat al-Iraq: Iraqi Vice President Adel Abdulmahdi said on Tuesday that his nomination for the premiership came in response to the will of the Nation al Alliance to speed up the formation of the new government not as a result of any Arab or regional pressures. Abdulmahdi told Aswat al-Iraq news agency correspondent during a press conference that he will work with other political blocs to form a government of national unity. He thanked the members of the National Alliance for their trust, including those who opposed or rejected his nomination. He underlined that he will be in the parliament’s building every day until forming the new government and ending the current crisis. Iraq has been in a political vacuum since the March 7 election which Allawi’s Iraqiya won by two seats over State of Law, although neither party won the majority needed to govern. Allawi and Maliki’s blocs have held tentative negotiations, but at the same time have also both been reaching out to other potential partners. http://en.aswataliraq.info/?p=136625
  11. Photo by: AP 'Israel has 8 days to strike Iran' By JPOST.COM STAFF 08/17/2010 15:09 Former US UN envoy Bolton: Attack before Bushehr facility ready. Former US envoy to the UN John Bolton said Monday that if Israel wants to prevent Iran from acquiring a working nuclear plant, than a military strike must be launched against the Bushehr nuclear power facility within the next eight days. The comments were made in an interview with the Fox Business Network. Russia, who is supplying the uranium fuel for the plant, announced last week that they will begin loading the Bushehr reactor on August 21. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w9qB5PVCZag?fs=1&hl=en_US">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w9qB5PVCZag?fs=1&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="264"> Bolton warned that once the Bushehr facility is operational it will be too late for a military air strike against Iran because such an attack would spread radiation and harm Iranian civilians. "Once that uranium, once those fuel rods are very close to the reactor, certainly once they're in the reactor, attacking it means a release of radiation, no question about it," Bolton said. http://www.jpost.com/IranianThreat/News/Article.aspx?id=185044

  14. Ultimatum to Dawlat al-Qanoon ends tomorrow – Aaraji August 9, 2010 - 10:17:40 BAGHDAD / Aswat al-Iraq: The ultimatum given by the Iraqi National Alliance (INA) to Dawlat al-Qanoon Alliance to choose another nominee for the premiership position, rather than current Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, will end tomorrow, Lawmaker Bahaa al-Aaraji of the INA said on Monday. “The Dawlat al-Qanoon should propose another nominee so that negotiations between the two alliances to form the new government can be resumed,” al-Aaraji told Aswat al-Iraq news agency. He noted that in case the Dawlat al-Qanoon did not replace al-Maliki with another nominee during the ultimatum’s timeline, the INA could join a coalition with the Al-Iraqiya and Kurdistan alliances.
  15. Kurdistan blocs delegation in Baghdad on Saturday August 6, 2010 - 11:34:25 ARBIL / Aswat al-Iraq: A delegation of the Kurdistan blocs will arrive in Baghdad on Saturday to start officials negotiations with the Iraqi blocs to from the government, a well-informed source said on Friday. “The delegation will return to Baghdad on Saturday (Aug. 7) to start official negotiations with al-Iraqiya Alliance, Dawlat al-Qanoon and the Iraqi National Alliance to form the new government,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency. The political chessboard in Iraq has been experiencing non-stop differences among the key blocs that won seats in the March 2010 legislative elections over the premiership and the government formation, namely between Maliki’s Dawlat al-Qanoon (State of Law) and former Premier Iyad Allawi’s al-Iraqiya bloc. Several parliament sessions were postponed while the set constitutional deadline to election a new speaker and a president of a republic was breached. The elections saw al-Iraqiya winning 91 seats, followed by Maliki’s State of Law with 89 seats, the Iraqi National Alliance (INA), which comprises Ammar al-Hakim’s Supreme Islamic Iraqi Council (SIIC), Muqtada al-Sadr’s Movement and Fadila (Virtue) Party, with 70 seats and the Kurdistan Alliance (KA) with 57 seats. The results prompt coalitions of several parties to guarantee a required majority at the 325-seat parliament in order to form a government. SH (P)

  17. Parliamentary alliance in jeopardy Thursday, August 5th 2010 10:37 AM Baghdad, Aug. 5 (AKnews) – A member of the State of Law Coalition (SLC) said on Wednesday that some political factions wanted to see the biggest parliamentary coalition in the Iraqi parliament dissolve, without naming a particular group. “We believe that the termination of the biggest parliamentary coalition would be a grave mistake, because it would give the al-Iraqiya list an opportunity to shape the new government and secure the prime minister's post in Iraq," said Mohammad Sadoun Saihud, an SLC lawmaker. “The Iraqi National Alliance (INA) has remained silent over the candidature for the prime ministerial post as the SLC remain firm in their nomination of Nouri al Maliki," Saihud continued. “We are very concerned about the INA's rejection of Maliki's candidature as they are rejecting a candidate who secured 700,000 votes in the elections," he added. The INA announced last week that they are boycotting all talks with the SLC as long as the SLC continues to support Maliki's candidature. The winning Iraqi political parties were to attend a parliamentary session on July 27, but the session was postponed indefinitely because the heads of the parliamentary blocs failed to agree upon the nomination of the new parliamentary speaker and his two deputies. The first attempt to hold a parliamentary session on June 14 was adjourned after just 20 minutes of talks. Iraq's political process has remained in a deadlock since the March 7 parliamentary elections which produced no clear winner. The Independent High Electoral Commission of Iraq issued the final results of the vote in late March. Allawi’s al-Iraqia list had secured 91 parliamentary seats. Maliki’s State of Law Coalition won 89 seats, the INA came third with 70 seats and a combination of Kurdish groups secured 57 seats. Maliki subsequently joined with the INA in order to form a larger coalition but this new union still does not have enough seats in the 325-seat parliament to get a majority. Ba//Ka/AKnews
