URGENT: Iraqi Defense, Electricity, Cabinet posts settled by al-Iraqiya Coaliltion: December 23, 2010 - 03:14:26 BAGHDAD / Aswat al-Iraq: The Defense and Electricity Ministers posts in the new Iraqi cabinet had been settled by al-Iraqiya Coalition, led by former Prime Minister Iyad Allawi, for Falah al-Naqib and Ziyad Tareq al-Dharb, al-Iraqiya Legislature Ziyad Tareq al-Dharb said on Thursday. “Al-Iraqiya Leader, Iyad Allawi, had sent an official letter to Prime Minister, Nouri al-Maliki, nominating the post of Electricity Minister for me (Dharb) and the Defense Minister’s post for Falah al-Naqib,” Dharb told Aswat al-Iraq news agency, adding that Maliki “had expressed approval for the nominations, and he shall attend the Parliament’s meeting next Sunday to present the nominations for voting and grant them the Parliament’s approval.” Noteworthy is that Ziyad Tareq al-Dharb, nominated for the Electricity Minister’s post, is a leader in Alhal (Solution), belonging to al-Iraqiya Coalition and is a communications engineer, whilst Falah al-Naqib is also an al-Iraqiya Legislature, who had occupied the post of Samarra city’s Local Council in 2003, and then Salahaddin Governor, followed by occupying the post of Interior Minister in Iraq’s Transitional Government, that was formed after the downfall of Iraq’s former regime in March, 2003. Naqib, born in 1956, is a civil engineer, graduated from a British University and his father, Hassan al-Naqib, had been an Iraqi opposition leader since the 1970s. The Iraqi Parliament had granted its confidence on 21/12/2010 to the new government’s program, presented by Prime Minister, Nouri al-Maliki and members of his cabinet, following a straneous struggle that continued for more than 9 months that followed March 7th nationwide parliamentary elections. World Bank allocates US$90 millions for Iraq’s Housing Projects: December 21, 2010 - 12:49:15 BAGHDAD / Aswat al-Iraq: The World Bank has granted Iraq a US$90 million credit to carry out projects, carried out by the Ministry of Housing & Reconstruction in different parts of the country, according to a Ministry statement on Tuesday. “The Ministry has implemented a number of projects, financed by a US$90 million credit by the World Bank, covering the construction of several roads in southern Iraq’s Wassit and Najaf Provinces, construction and rehabilitation of 10 main roads and 4 bridges in west Iraq’s Babel and southern Iraq’s Muthanna Provinces,” the Ministry’s Media Director told Aswat al-Iraq news agency. He said among other projects, to be implemented by the Ministry using the credit would be rehabilitation of several roads, connecting towns and villages in Diwaniya, Kut, Nassiriya, Amara cities, along with a main highway connecting Baghdad with Kut. Parliament adjourns session, Maliki to present cabinet line up December 20, 2010 - 04:28:51 BAGHDAD / Aswat al-Iraq: The Iraqi Parliament adjourned session on Monday after discussing all issues listed on its agenda, a member of al-Iraqiya List said. “The session was adjourned until tomorrow to discuss the cabinet line up to be presented by the Prime Minister-designate Nouri al-Maliki at 5:00pmm today,” Salah al-Juburi told Aswat al-Iraq news agency. “Prime Minister-designate Nouri al-Maliki sent an official letter to the parliament, asking to present his cabinet line up on Dec. 20,” the state-run television of Iraqia quoted Minister of State for Council of Representatives affairs Safa al-Din Mohammed al-Safi as saying. On Nov. 25, Iraqi President Jalal Talabani officially asked incumbent Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki to form the country’s next government after the rival political blocs approved earlier a power-sharing deal that ended the eight-month political deadlock. According to the Iraqi constitution, Maliki has to pick his cabinet within 30 days after his official nomination as prime minister-designate by the president. The Spokesman for the Supreme Legislative Council, Abdul-Sattar al-Biraqdar, told Aswat al-Iraq early in the day that Prime Minister Delegate, Nouri al-Maliki, can hold some cabinet posts on acting minister’s basis, till the assignment of the original ministers. “Al-Iraqiya Coalition (led by former Prime Minister Iyad Allawi) has managed to settle 90% of its candidates for the cabinet posts, with the acception of the Agricluture and Electricity Ministries,” Dainy said. A source in the Parliament’s media office, told Aswat al-Iraq early in the day that the “Parliament had opened its 11th session, with the presence of 163 legislatures, under chairmanship of its Speaker, Usma al-Nujeifi, pointing out that the National Coalition’s MPs had withdrawal from the session, in protest against the Parliament’s failure to take a decision about the mechanism of lifting the eradication, under discussion being part of the proposed law on the National Council for Strategic Studies (NCSS),” presented by al-Iraqiya Coalition. An ongoing dialogue is taking place among members of al-Iraqiya Coalition and members of other blocs towards the lifting of the ‘eracication’ imposed against several members of al-Iraqiya, about the authorities of the NCSS, whilst al-Iraqiya Coalition is demanding the quick lifting of the eradicatin and other blocs insist that such decision necessitates a series of measures. Mike Mullen, the top U.S. military official, arrived in Baghdad on Monday in a surprise visit to Iraq, according to AFP. The U.S. officer will visit with American troops involved in the advise-and-assist effort in Iraq. Almost 50,000 U.S. service members are training the Iraqi military and police as part of Operation New Dawn. The Iraqi security forces are in the lead for security in the nation. The U.S. military has an agreement with the Iraqi government to leave by the end of 2011.
